How to care for Philodendron 'Golden Diamond' in winter? Do these things well to overwinter it safely
I. Methods
1. Pot and soil
Use a container with good aeration for it; if it is not attractive enough, you can cover it with another flower pot on the outside. Coarse sand can be used as a bottom layer in the container, and some oil residue can be added as a base fertilizer. It likes fertile, breathable, loose soil, preferably slightly acidic. The water and soil in many places in the north tend to be alkaline, so fermented rice-washing water can be used for watering. You can also mix your own soil by combining rotten leaves, peat soil and some coarse sand, stirring them evenly. Soil has a heat-preserving effect and can help it resist the cold winter. According to its growth, it can be repotted about once every two years, generally in spring.
2. Light and temperature
It prefers a humid environment and tolerates shade, but its cold resistance is poor. In winter, place it in a sunny area of the home, such as a balcony. It needs an environment of 18 to 25 degrees. If you want it to get through winter safely, create conditions for it of no less than 8 degrees, and the coldest it can take must not be below 5 degrees. If the indoor temperature in winter is above 15 degrees, it can even continue to grow.
3. Water and fertilizer
It needs a lot of water. Normally, rice-washing water can be used for watering, which both replenishes water and adds nutrients. During its growing period, keep it moist. When the temperature drops in winter, reduce the frequency of watering and wait until the soil is dry before watering. Although northern homes are relatively dry in deep winter, its adaptability is fairly strong, so there is no need to worry too much. Add cake fertilizer water once every 1 month; in winter, fertilizing can be temporarily stopped or no fertilizer added.
II. Precautions
1. Do not water too many times. The bottom of the pot must allow good drainage and aeration. Indoor light must not be too dim, as this is not good for growth.
2. In winter, control water and fertilizer. To prevent the leaves from growing too spread out, you can use wooden sticks to prop up the leaf stalks, and after the leaves have grown well after winter, we can slowly loosen them for it.
