How to Grow Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus)? Detailed Guide to Cultivation Methods and Precautions

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Rose of Sharon is actually a variety of Hibiscus syriacus. It grows between 3 m and 4 m tall, blooms from July to October, and bears pink, single-petaled flowers that are very elegant and simple. Because of its long blooming period and the fresh, refined overall appearance of the plant, it is very suitable for growing at home. Let's take a look at how to grow it.

1. Sunlight

This plant loves sunlight very much, but it can also tolerate short periods without direct sunlight.

2. Water

This plant prefers a somewhat moist environment. Although it is also quite drought-tolerant, it should not remain in dry potting soil for long periods; in severe cases, it will grow poorly and even die. When first transplanting, water it once, and water thoroughly, then keep the soil consistently moist until it has fully settled in; after that, just keep the soil slightly moist. Do not water too much during rainy weather; during routine watering, do not let water accumulate or leave the soil in an overly wet state for long periods.

3. Nutrients

When the branches and leaves begin to sprout, apply fertilizer once to supply enough nutrients for better growth; when flower buds appear, apply fertilizer another 1 to 2 times, with the fertilizer mainly based on potassium and phosphorus; the period from May to October is the blooming season, so apply fertilizer twice as well; before winter arrives, apply fertilizer once more, and you can pause fertilizing throughout the winter. For flower fertilizer, you can choose a dedicated flower fertilizer.

4. Pruning

For the first two years after planting, almost no pruning is needed, or only simple pruning. However, in winter, all branches affected by pests or diseases and extremely weak branches should be pruned off, and after pruning, clean up thoroughly. Once it has fully grown, it can be shaped and pruned, but this should be done in autumn after all the leaves have fallen. After each pruning, be sure to clean up the fallen leaves and branches thoroughly.
