The Large Yorkshire pig is also known as the Large White or Large Yorkshire, and originated in the United Kingdom. Because the Large Yorkshire pig has a large body size, strong reproductive capacity, high feed conversion rate and slaughter rate, and strong adaptability, it is raised in all countries with developed pig industries worldwide, and is the world's most famous and most widely distributed dominant lean-type pig breed. Below, the editor will introduce the Large Yorkshire pig breed, and let's take a look together.
1. Origin
The Large Yorkshire pig was developed in the United Kingdom in the 18th century. It is a world-famous breed and has been introduced to many countries because of its large body size and rapid weight gain. In China, more pigs are raised in Hubei, Hunan, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Henan, Liaoning and other provinces.
2. Breed characteristics
The Large Yorkshire pig has a large body size and a well-proportioned build. It has excellent traits such as strong adaptability, high reproductive capacity, fast growth speed, high lean meat rate, good meat quality and a sturdy constitution. The ears are erect and the nose is straight. The back and loin are mostly slightly arched. The limbs are relatively long. The coat is all white, and a few have small dark spots on the skin at the forehead and horns.
3. Breed performance
For Large Yorkshire pigs at 24 months of age, boars average 263 kg in body weight, 169 cm in body length, 154 cm in chest circumference and 92 cm in body height; adult sows are correspondingly 224 kg, 168 cm, 151 cm and 87 cm. The Large Yorkshire pig is one of the world's famous meat-type breeds. It is widely distributed in China and has good adaptability, with characteristics such as fast growth, high feed utilization rate, high lean meat rate and a relatively large number of piglets born, but it has shortcomings such as weak hoof quality and a tendency to hoof and leg diseases.
4. Production performance
(1) Fattening performance: fast weight gain and feed saving; at 6 months of age, body weight can reach about 100 kg. Under conditions of good nutrition and free feeding, daily weight gain can reach about 700 g. About 3 kg of compound feed is consumed per 1 kg of weight gain. At a body weight of 90 kg, the slaughter rate is 71%-73%, and the lean meat rate is 60%-65%.
(2) Reproductive performance: multiparous sows give birth to 11 piglets, have more than 7 pairs of teats, and begin mating at 8.5-10 months of age.
5. Breed introduction
Large Yorkshire pigs come in three types: large, medium and small, respectively called the Large White, Middle White and Small White.
(1) The Large White belongs to the bacon type and is the most widely distributed pig breed in the world. It has a long body; adult boars weigh 300 to 500 kg, and sows 200 to 350 kg. It has strong reproductive capacity, with 10 to 12 piglets per litter.
(2) The Middle White is intermediate in body size between the other two and belongs to the meat type.
(3) The Small White is early-maturing and easily fattened, and belongs to the fat type.
The above is an introduction to the Large Yorkshire pig breed. In China, more Large White pigs are raised. In recent years, among the Large White pigs introduced from abroad (mainly from Canada, but also from other countries), some breeding pigs have very well-developed back muscles and hindquarter muscles and are favoured, and in China they are called double-muscled rump Large White pigs.
