How do you select jasmine seeds? What are the seedling raising methods?
I believe everyone is fairly familiar with jasmine; its small, delicate, pure white and elegantly understated appearance has been widely loved by the public since ancient times. Jasmine can grow continuously all year round, and when it blooms it gives off a rich fragrance, with vivid colors, and looks very beautiful. Nowadays many people have grown jasmine potted plants at home, so how should jasmine seeds be selected? And what are the seedling raising methods? Let's find out together.
How do you select jasmine seeds?
When selecting seeds, you must be careful to identify them properly. The seeds are black, look very smooth, are round, like small round balls of a deep purple color similar to black pearls; these are authentic jasmine seeds. Of course, there are also many varieties of jasmine, and their flowering cycle length and growth quality are all different, so when selecting seeds, you must also decide based on your own actual planting and production needs. Also, choose a purchasing channel from a reputable seller, so that after-sales service and quality are guaranteed to a certain extent.
Seedling raising methods for jasmine seeds
Jasmine generally does not set seed after flowering, so in production only asexual propagation can be used, through several methods such as cuttings, layering, and division. However, because jasmine has a strong regenerative ability, using the cutting propagation method results in fast rooting and a high rate of successful seedling formation. Compared with the layering method and the division method, it has the advantages of being simple to operate and saving materials, and is therefore widely used. The key points are as follows:
1. Selecting cuttings and the nursery
The cuttings used for propagation mainly come from the branches cut off during the major pruning each year. Choose vigorous, middle-aged branches that are free of pests and diseases and have a certain thickness; for the same branch, the middle and lower parts are best. As for the nursery, in terms of selection it requires sandy soil or sandy loam that is loose and fertile, with sufficient water sources and convenient drainage and irrigation.
2. Land preparation and bed shaping
Before raising seedlings in the nursery land, plow deeply and expose the soil to the sun until it turns white, rake it fine and level it, dig drainage and irrigation ditches around it, and open ditches to form beds with a bed width of 120 cm, a ditch width of 25 cm, and a depth of 20 cm. After the seedbed is thoroughly watered and wet, use the pre-emergence herbicide Du'a mixture at 150 ml per mu diluted with water and spray it on the seedbed.
3. Cutting management
Before cutting, the cuttings must be treated with chemicals. First, use Sportak prepared into a 1000-fold solution and soak for 3-5 minutes, then remove and dry in the shade. Then soak in a 50 PPM rooting powder solution for 20-30 minutes, and after removing, insert them into the seedbed at a plant and row spacing of 12 cm x 4 cm. The cutting seedbed must be kept moist; on sunny days, pay attention to frequent weeding, and keep the seedlings free of the phenomenon of weeds covering the seedlings. The seedlings in the seedbed are small and have few roots, so water and fertilizer must be applied; it is best to irrigate with clear manure water, and if pests and diseases are found to be a threat, they must also be controlled in time.
4. Transplanting management
Transplanting is best in spring and autumn, which suits the survival and growth of the jasmine root system, and at the same time it can be harvested in the same year it is planted. Choose seedlings with a plant height of more than 30 cm, more than two branches, two layers of roots, normal leaf color, robust plants, and no pests or diseases. Cut off branches and leaves above 25 cm, cut off overly long roots, and at the same time treat the roots by dipping them in 0.1% Sportak + 0.3% calcium superphosphate solution for 3-5 minutes before planting, then plant them in the planting ditch at a plant spacing of 25 cm.
The above is an introduction to the selection of jasmine seeds and seedling raising methods. Overall, jasmine is still a relatively easy flower to grow; all year round, whether in the south or in the north, as long as the temperature is suitable it can grow continuously.
