Wuta-tsai, also known as Tadi Song, Black Vegetable and so on, is a cold-hardy vegetable. Wuta-tsai is rich in nutrients and has a unique flavor, making it deeply loved by people, and many want to grow it themselves. Wuta-tsai is generally sown from seed, so how do you select wuta-tsai seeds? What are the seedling raising methods? Let's find out together.
How to Select Wuta-tsai Seeds?
There are many ways to buy wuta-tsai seeds; you can go online or to a local agricultural supply store, both of which sell them. Wuta-tsai seeds are generally sold by the packet, priced at around 3-7 yuan per packet. When buying, pay attention to the packaging date, manufacturer, and variety, and it is best to choose ones with a more recent date.
What Are the Wuta-tsai Seedling Raising Methods?
1. Sowing and Seedling Raising
To sow the seeds evenly, you can first mix a little dry fine soil into the seeds. After sowing, rake once with a shallow harrow and tread over it once, so that the seeds and soil are tightly combined, which helps the seeds germinate. Seedlings emerge 3~4 days after sowing. From 7~15 days after sowing, when the seedlings have grown to 2 leaves and 1 heart, thin them out, with a seedling spacing of 2~4 cm.
2. Planting Out
The seedling age of wuta-tsai is 25~30 days. When the seedlings have grown to 6~7 true leaves, they can be planted out, with a plant and row spacing of 25~33 cm. Water promptly after planting to help the seedlings recover.
3. Field Management
Wuta-tsai is relatively easy to manage. It must not lack water during the growth process; after the seedlings recover, water regularly to promote root growth. When fertilizing wuta-tsai, a quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer can be applied as a top dressing, which is relatively beneficial to the growth of wuta-tsai. In winter, when the ground temperature is low and growth is slow, the number of top dressings should be reduced. You can also scatter some plant ash and farmyard manure on the soil to ensure wuta-tsai overwinters safely.
4. Pest and Disease Control
The main diseases of wuta-tsai are black spot and viral disease. To control black spot, spray with 75% chlorothalonil wettable powder at 500~600 times dilution, or 50% iprodione wettable powder at 1500 times dilution. For viral disease, spray 20% Virus A wettable powder at 500 times dilution, or 1.5% Zhibingling emulsion at 1000 times dilution in the early stage of the disease for control. Spray once every 7~10 days, for 2~3 consecutive sprays.
5. Harvesting
The harvest timing of wuta-tsai can be determined according to climatic conditions and market prices. Generally, it can be harvested 30~40 days after planting out. If you need it to grow fully larger, start harvesting about 70 days after planting out.
Wuta-tsai is a high-quality vegetable with edible value, ornamental value, and high yield. It is one of the main vegetables in winter and one of the more popular vegetables. You may consider buying seeds to plant it.
