What are the methods for selecting kohlrabi seeds and raising seedlings?
Kohlrabi, also called earth kohlrabi, eggplant lotus, stem cabbage and so on, is a vegetable that likes mild, humid conditions and has very high nutritional value, and it is grown in many regions of China. Kohlrabi is generally sown from seed, so how do you select the seeds? What are the seedling-raising methods? Let's find out below.
How do you select kohlrabi seeds?
1. Look at the dealer
Whether they have a business license, seed certificate of conformity, quality certificate of conformity, business license, etc.
2. Look at the packaging
The production date should be clearly visible; choose kohlrabi seeds with a production date as close as possible to the present. Check whether there is an anti-counterfeiting mark, and whether the contents match the seeds being sold, such as seed category, variety name, place of origin, production date, quality indicators, quarantine certificate number, and seed production and business license numbers.
3. Look at the seeds
Corn seeds are plump in appearance and basically uniform in size and shape. The color is relatively deep and glossy. The texture is relatively hard, and the seed coat does not break easily. They feel dry and do not feel sticky to the touch, etc.
What are the methods for raising kohlrabi seedlings?
1. Sowing and raising seedlings
Raise seedlings in a greenhouse and do a good job of cold protection. First broadcast-sow in a seedling tray; after the kohlrabi emerges, divide the seedlings and cultivate strong seedlings. Prepare the seedbed soil in a volume ratio of peat : garden soil : decomposed organic fertilizer = 6:3:1. To reduce the occurrence of seedling-stage diseases, the nutrient soil can be sprayed with a 1000-fold solution of 15% hymexazol aqueous solution for sterilization and disinfection.
Fill the seedling tray with soil, water it thoroughly, and broadcast-sow seeds that have been soaked in 55°C warm water for 10-15 minutes and then soaked for 4-6 hours into the seedling tray. Cover with about 0.5 cm of moist fine soil, then cover with plastic film. After emergence in 2-3 days, uncover the plastic film and control moisture. When the seedlings have 2-3 true leaves, divide the seedlings and transplant them into 72-cell plug trays. After sowing, keep the room temperature at 23-25°C and the soil temperature at about 20°C. After emergence, keep the room temperature at 20-23°C during the day and about 10°C at night. The seedling age of kohlrabi is generally 30-40 days, and it can be transplanted and planted when it has 5-7 true leaves.
2. Planting management
One day before planting, fumigate the greenhouse with isoprocarb smoke agent. The next day, ventilate to release the residual smoke completely, then plant. The planting row spacing is 40-50 cm, and the plant spacing is 30-40 cm. The planting density is 5000-5500 plants per 667 sq m, with reasonable close planting.
3. Temperature management
During the seedling recovery period, the greenhouse temperature should preferably be about 30°C; after seedling recovery, it is generally suitable to keep it at 20-25°C during the day and about 10°C at night. During the stem swelling period, minimize high temperatures above 30°C, as excessively high temperatures will cause the kohlrabi flesh to become fibrous. In northern regions, winter temperatures are relatively low, so cotton quilts and straw mats should be uncovered and covered in time in the morning and evening, and good insulation and freeze protection measures should be taken.
4. Water and fertilizer management
After planting, water to help the seedlings recover. The seedling recovery period is about 7 days; if there is no drought, try not to water. After seedling recovery, water in a timely manner to keep the soil moist, and carry out 1-2 shallow hoeings to loosen the soil. When the stem begins to swell, mainly use small amounts of water and water frequently; watering should be even, and flood irrigation must be avoided, otherwise the stem is prone to deformity and cracking.
5. Pest and disease control
When kohlrabi is grown in greenhouses in autumn and winter in the cold northern regions, diseases rarely occur, and insect pests occur occasionally, mainly aphids and cabbage moths. When only a small amount occurs at the seedling stage, the leaves bearing insects can be picked off and disposed of in time. When pests occur in large numbers at the seedling stage or after planting, smoke fumigation or spraying pyrethroid pesticides should be adopted in time.
Kohlrabi was introduced into China from west to east through the ancient Silk Road, and the time of its introduction into China was no later than the Yuan Dynasty in the 13th century. Kohlrabi is a health vegetable with very high nutritional value and is deeply loved by people, and everyone can choose to grow it according to their own actual situation.
