How do you select cherry seeds? What are the seedling-raising methods?
Cherries have bright, vivid coloring and a crystal-clear, translucent look that is very attractive; they taste sweet and tart and are delicious, and the fruit contains very rich nutrients. They are highly popular in the market. Right now, cherries are not cheap on the market, and more and more farmers are growing cherries, so how do you select cherry seeds? What are the seedling-raising methods? Let's take a look together below.
1. How do you select cherry seeds?
We all know that cherry seeds taken out directly cannot be planted right away, because they still have a fairly hard shell on the outside, and if this shell is not removed, they will have a hard time germinating. So when you normally eat cherries, collect the seeds, wash them clean with clear water, then put them in the sun to dry. After drying, you also need to use a hard object to crack open the outer shell and then remove it.
After the outer shell of the cherry seeds is removed, they also need to be soaked in clear water. When soaking, the water temperature is best kept at around 20 degrees, and the soaking time should exceed 24 hours. After soaking, the cherry seeds can be placed in a warm, moist environment for germination treatment, or they can be wrapped in a moist towel and placed in a warm spot indoors. After 5-7 days, check whether they have sprouted.
2. What are the seedling-raising methods for cherries?
1. Cherry spring-sowing seedling raising
① After harvesting the cherries, cut through the skin and flesh to take out the pit, wash off with clear water the flesh attached to the outside of the pit, then place it in a cool, shaded spot to dry for 1-2 days before sowing.
② When sowing, sow the pit directly in a shallow pot; 10-30 days after sowing, the seed can germinate. When the seedling grows to 5-10 cm, transplant it into a soft plastic pot.

3. Cherry seedling raising by the cutting method
① The cutting method is simple and has the highest success rate; with proper management, there will be a 60-90% survival rate.
② During the spring and summer growing period, select semi-mature, vigorous branches with a diameter of 0.7-1.2 cm, each segment 15-20 cm long, with 4-6 leaves attached. Insert them into river sand, vermiculite, peat soil, or a mixture of several of these, all of which are suitable as a seedbed medium for cuttings. The cuttings especially need to be kept moist and shaded.
③ About 1.5-2 months after cutting, roots develop; after the root mass grows vigorously, transplant them.
The above is an introduction to cherries. Cherry trees generally need to grow for 3-7 years before they bear fruit, but I generally grow them as potted plants. If you want them to bear fruit, it is best to buy cutting-grown seedlings directly; the care takes a very long time.
