Verbena is a fairly easy-to-grow household flower with a long flowering period and strong ornamental value. Verbena likes a warm environment, and the seeds only sprout at around 15°C. With proper management, it can bloom all over a balcony, which is very spectacular. So how should verbena seeds be selected? What are the seedling-raising methods? Let's find out together.

How do you select verbena seeds?

Verbena seeds are generally cylindrical and especially small, so you need to be careful when selecting them. Gently pinch them with your fingers; it is best to choose relatively plump seeds, as this gives a higher success rate when sowing. They should also be glossy. Some very dull seeds are basically those that have been stored for a long time, and their germination rate after sowing is extremely low, so be careful to avoid them.

What are the seedling-raising methods?

1. Nutrient soil preparation

When preparing nutrient soil, you can use sandy loam, coarse sand, peat soil and sawdust mixed in a 2:1:1:1 ratio, or use peat soil, vermiculite and perlite mixed in a 2:1:1 ratio.

2. Sowing and seedling raising

Verbena seeds are generally best sown in spring. Verbena seeds differ from other seeds: they have a high germination rate and a short germination time, and they will only germinate after two to three weeks at 15 to 17°C. When sowing, the plug tray sowing method is generally used, and after sowing, cover with a thin layer of vermiculite, which both retains moisture and allows light through, helping the seeds germinate. The optimum germination temperature is 20-22°C.

3. Seedling management

During the germination stage, the soil should be kept appropriately moist, but not too wet, as this can easily cause seed rot and lead to failure to germinate. When the first leaf appears, let the seedlings receive sunlight, otherwise the seedlings will be very weak, and at the same time apply about a 4000-fold dilution of 20-10-20 water-soluble fertilizer. When three true leaves appear, reduce the fertilizer concentration to a 3000-fold dilution of 20-10-20 water-soluble fertilizer, and at the same time control moisture. After hardening off, prepare to pot up.

4. Transplanting and potting up

Begin transplanting and potting up when there are more than 4 true leaves. Choose a nutrient pot of 13cm or more, and for the substrate generally choose garden soil plus organic fertilizer plus compound fertilizer. One to two weeks after potting up, or when the seedlings are 6-10 cm tall and have more than six leaves, remove the growing tips and keep the lower 3-4 leaves to encourage branching.

In general, verbena not only has diverse colors and attractive flower shapes, but the key point is that it is also easy to care for. However, paying attention to selecting good seeds and doing a good job of seedling raising can make later care and management much more effective with half the effort. If you also have some good seedling-raising methods, you are welcome to share them.
