Mallow is a biennial or perennial erect herb, and like yellow okra and hollyhock, it is a typical representative plant of the Malvaceae family. When mallow blooms, the flowers are purplish-red or white, mainly for garden ornamentation, and besides ornamental use, mallow also has a certain medicinal value, so it is now widely cultivated. So where are mallow seeds sold? What are the seedling cultivation methods? Let's find out together.

Where to Buy Mallow Seeds?

Mallow is cultivated throughout northern and southern China, from Guangdong and Guangxi in the south to Inner Mongolia and Liaoning in the north, so there are plenty of places to buy mallow seeds. Basically, wherever there are local growers, you can go to their bases to select seeds. In addition, you can also buy seeds online or at large flower markets. Of course, if you grow mallow yourself, that is best, as you can collect the seeds yourself.

What Are the Seedling Cultivation Methods?

1. Sowing and seedling cultivation

Mallow seeds need to be baked over fire to crack their outer shells, so that moisture can penetrate into the seed interior and the sprouts will emerge. Mallow is also generally propagated by seed, usually sown in autumn (early September) or early spring (late March to late April). When sowing, try not to choose soil that is too acidic; secondly, because the plant is relatively large, attention should be paid to fertilizer and water management.

2. Seedling cultivation methods

These are mainly divided into two types: pot seedling cultivation and open-field seedling cultivation. For open-field seedling cultivation, the substrate should be watered thoroughly, then the seeds evenly scattered on the substrate, and then covered with about one centimeter of soil. Take care to keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged. Spring-sown plants are generally planted out in May and can bloom in June, while autumn-sown plants are generally planted out in early November.

3. Seedling management

1) Fertilizing and watering: Mallow enters its growth period from May, and nitrogen-phosphorus combined fertilizer should be applied 1-2 times. From June it blooms successively until October, and each month a phosphorus-based fertilizer should be applied as a top dressing 1-2 times to keep the flowers blooming continuously. Water according to the principle of "do not water if not dry", and in cold winters and hot summers water should be appropriately controlled to keep the soil slightly dry.

2) Light: Mallow prefers sufficient light, and even in midsummer it does not need shading, but it should be sprayed with water frequently and kept well ventilated.

3) Temperature: The suitable growing temperature for mallow is 18°C to 25°C. After winter begins, it should be moved indoors promptly, placed in a sunny and warm spot, and the indoor temperature kept at 3-5°C.

4. Pest and disease control

Common diseases include sooty mold. In daily care, pay attention to ventilation and light transmission. When affected, spray with a 1000-fold dilution of 50% tebuconazole. Common pests include aphids and scale insects. In daily care, they can be killed by spraying with a 2000-fold dilution of 25% cyhalothrin emulsifiable concentrate or a 2000-fold dilution of 10% omethoate.

Mallow has strong adaptability and can grow in various soils. It is suitable not only for flowerbed landscaping but also for planting in courtyards or potted cultivation and other places. Mallow's flowering period can last from June all the way to October, but the key is to do a good job in seedling management and daily care.
