Introduction to the Main Varieties of Privet Tree Seeds and Propagation Methods
Privet is a very common ornamental tree, also called white wax tree, wintergreen, or wax tree. Many flower lovers choose to plant such a tree in their own courtyard. Its fruit can be dried in the sun and used as medicine, with certain medicinal effects. So what are the main varieties of privet seeds? How is propagation carried out? Next, let the editor tell everyone!
I. Main Varieties of Privet Tree Seeds
1. Large-leaved privet
Deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub, with spreading branches, and branchlets bearing short pubescence. Leaves thinly leathery, elliptical to obovate-oblong, hairless, apex blunt, base wedge-shaped, entire margin, edges slightly rolled outward; petiole with short pubescence. Panicle; flowers white, fragrant, sessile, corolla lobes equal in length to the tube; anthers exceeding the corolla lobes. Drupe elliptical, purple-black. Flowering period July--August.
2. Red-leaf privet (purple-leaf privet)
Evergreen small tree, with opposite simple leaves, branchlets slightly downy, leaves ovate, ovate to ovate-elliptical, thinly leathery. The leaf shape is very similar to that of small-leaved privet, with stronger sprouting ability, and it grows relatively fast and vigorously. Its new shoots and young leaves are purplish-red, and against the backdrop of old leaves they appear even more vivid and dazzling. If pruned several times, the new branches become dense, and the entire crown appears purplish-red, making it even more gorgeous and striking among clusters of green plants. After entering winter, the whole plant turns purple-black again, making it even more conspicuous among all things.
3. Tall-stem privet/wintergreen tree
It is an evergreen large shrub or tree, with grayish-brown bark, smooth and not cracked. Leaves 8-12 cm long, leathery and glossy, green through the winter, with the function of retaining dust and resisting smoke, and able to absorb sulfur dioxide. It adapts to factory and mining area and urban greening, and is one of the rare evergreen broad-leaved tree species in the north.
4. Golden-leaf privet
Golden-leaf privet has golden-yellow leaf color, and in spring and autumn especially the color is even more brilliant and beautiful. Golden-leaf privet likes light, has relatively poor shade tolerance, medium cold resistance, and strong adaptability. It is not strict about soil requirements, but loose, fertile, and well-aerated sandy loam is best. It is used for forming characters or patterns in green spaces and squares, and can also be used for small courtyard decoration.
5. Variegated privet
Deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub, with spreading branches, and branchlets bearing short pubescence. Leaves thinly leathery, elliptical to obovate-oblong, hairless, apex blunt, base wedge-shaped, entire margin, edges slightly rolled outward; petiole with short pubescence. Panicle; flowers white, fragrant, sessile, corolla lobes equal in length to the tube; anthers exceeding the corolla lobes. Drupe elliptical, purple-black. Flowering period July--August.
II. How Are Privet Tree Seeds Propagated?
1. Seed propagation
Sow from early March to mid-April. There are no strict requirements for the nursery soil, as long as it is loose and fertile. Before sowing, soak the peeled seeds in warm water for 1 day to 2 days, then sow, in drills or by broadcasting. The row spacing for drilling is 20 cm, cover with soil 1.5 cm to 2 cm, and the sowing rate is about 7 kg per mu. Because privet takes a relatively long time to emerge, about 1 month, after sowing it is best to cover the seedbed surface with grass to preserve moisture. After the seedlings emerge, loosen the soil and weed in time. Thin the seedlings when the seedlings are 5 cm tall. Seedlings are afraid of waterlogging, so pay attention to drainage, but they should also be irrigated when it is too dry. Apply topdressing 12 times according to conventional management. Weed once a month. One-year-old seedlings can reach 50 cm in height. If cultivating large seedlings, they need to be transplanted to another bed, and can leave the nursery after 2 years to 4 years.
2. Cutting propagation
In November, cut branches grown in spring and bury them for storage, then take them out in February or March of the following spring for cuttings. The cuttings are 0.3 cm to 0.4 cm thick, each about 1518 cm long, with a flat upper end and a slanted lower end, and 12 leaves retained on the upper part. Insert the cuttings into the soil to 2/3 of their length, with a plant spacing of 10 cm. They root about 2 months after insertion, and the seedlings can reach 7090 cm in height in the same year. Tall-stem privet has elegant branches and leaves, is evergreen all year round, and is covered with white flowers in summer. It also adapts to the urban climate environment and is a common greening tree species in the Yangtze River basin; it is often planted for courtyard viewing, widely planted along streets and in residential courtyards, or used as park road trees, or pruned for hedges. It has strong resistance to a variety of toxic gases and can be used as a pollution-resistant tree species in factory and mining areas.
Above, the editor has described in detail the five main varieties of privet tree seeds. Each has its own characteristics. If you want to plant them, you can choose the one you like best to grow. If you find the propagation methods above useful, save them!
