How to grow peony seedlings?
1. Site selection
Choose a wind-sheltered place with an average sunshine duration of 5-7 hours and convenient transportation, irrigation, and drainage as the seedling site.
2. Nutrient soil
Use yellow soil subsoil, burned turf mud, honeycomb coal ash, and phosphate fertilizer. The specific composition is 50% yellow soil subsoil, 35% burned turf mud, 12% honeycomb coal ash, and 3% phosphate fertilizer. Grind and sieve them separately, then mix and stir evenly, put them into nutrient containers, and then arrange them neatly on the ground to form a cup bed. The cup bed should run north-south, with a bed width of 1.0-1.2 m. Drainage ditches should be opened around it, and the path width is 30 cm. The bottom of the ditch must be flat and slope slightly toward the surroundings to facilitate drainage. For the nutrient cups, choose polyethylene film bags with a thickness of 0.05-0.08 mm, a diameter of 5~8 cm, and a height of 13-15 cm. Punch round holes with a diameter of 0.4 cm every 2 cm on the bag wall for drainage and ventilation.
3. Seed selection and germination
From Frost's Descent to the Start of Winter, collect seeds from robust 3-year-old plants, soak them in warm water at 40°C for 10-12 hours, then take them out and put them into cloth bags for germination.
4. Sowing
Sow the germinated seeds in the nutrient cups by dibbling, sowing 3-4 seeds per bag, then evenly cover the cup bed with nutrient soil, just enough that the seeds are no longer visible, water thoroughly, and then cover the surface of the cup bed with plastic film to keep warm and moist. This can more effectively increase the bed surface temperature and humidity, make seedlings emerge earlier, and promote seedling growth. When 80%-85% of the young shoots emerge, remove the plastic film in the evening or on cloudy days. If there is continuous sunny weather and the bed surface is dry, water with a watering can in the morning and evening.
Because peony is both a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine and a precious flower, and also has nourishing and whitening, spot-removing, and skin-care effects, the demand is very large. Developing artificial peony cultivation not only beautifies the environment but also increases medicinal resources, with considerable economic benefits!
