When autumn comes, many people hope to see beautiful red maple trees, do you feel the same? There are quite a lot of maple varieties, and some people deliberately plant maples for viewing, so which one is good? What varieties of maple seeds are there? How do you grow seedlings? The editor below will tell you in detail!

1. What varieties of maple seeds are there?

1. Red maple

It is famous for its bright red leaves, which are very evenly red, and it grows relatively fast. It is often used as a shade tree and can grow to 21m.

2. Thread-leaf Japanese maple

The leaf shape is elegant, generally weeping, and it can only grow to 3m at most.

3. Japanese maple

It is famous for its perfect performance in every season. Japanese maple is a focal point wherever it grows in a flower border and can grow to 6m tall.

4. Sugar maple

It is the source of maple syrup. As a shade tree, its leaf color turns orange-red after autumn arrives, and it can grow to 24m.

5. Black maple

It is a close relative of sugar maple, its leaf color turns bright yellow in autumn, and it can grow to 21m.

6. Silver maple

The underside of the leaves is silver, and it grows relatively fast, so it is suitable for planting in remote wasteland that urgently needs to be cultivated, and it can grow to 24m.

7. Amur maple

It has a delicate form and can handle any place that needs a small tree. This shrub-type variety turns wine-red in autumn, and it can grow to 6m.

2. How do you grow maple seeds into seedlings?

1. Nursery site selection and treatment

For American red maple seedling cultivation, choose slightly acidic, moist, well-drained sandy loam with good irrigation conditions. Before sowing, apply 5000kg of organic fertilizer and 50kg of NPK compound fertilizer per mu. To prevent seedling pests and diseases, especially underground pests, use 8-10kg of ferrous sulfate and 2kg of phoxim granules per mu, mix them evenly with fine soil, spread on the surface, then deep plow, harrow finely, level and make beds. The beds should be 1 meter wide, the bed ridges 30 cm wide, and the beds 20-30 meters long.

2. Seed treatment, sowing time and method

American red maple seeds have no dormancy, so they can be sown in either autumn or spring. Here we mainly introduce spring sowing. The sowing time is preferably from mid-March to mid-April. Before sowing, first mix the seeds evenly with wet sand at a ratio of 1:3, and place them under 3-5°C for one month of low-temperature sand stratification. During stratification, check and manage them regularly. If germinated seeds are found, sow them in time. When sowing, first irrigate the bed with enough bottom water, wait for the water to seep down, then sow, with a sowing rate of about 200 seeds per square meter. After sowing, cover with 0.5 cm of fine soil. To preserve moisture, raise soil temperature, and make the seeds sprout early and evenly, cover with plastic film or a small arch shed. The arch shed should be ventilated, and when the noon temperature exceeds 30°C, shade it appropriately. Generally, the seedlings emerge completely about 15-20 days after sowing.

3. Seedling stage management and growth

After the seedlings emerge, their initial growth is slow and their resistance is poor, so spray water frequently to maintain soil moisture, and remove weeds in time. When hoeing weeds, cultivate the soil in time and pile up as much soil as possible to prevent lodging. When the seedlings grow to 5 cm tall, thin them, generally after thorough irrigation, removing weak, diseased and small seedlings at a spacing of 10-15 cm to keep the seedlings robust and uniform. Where seedlings are missing, choose a rainy day to transplant and fill in seedlings with soil balls. In early June, apply urea as a topdressing together with watering, 15kg per mu. In mid-July, apply another 10-15kg of urea per mu as a topdressing, and appropriately control water later. If pests such as slug moths are found, spray 2.5% deltamethrin 4000-fold solution for control. In the same year, seedling height can reach 1-1.5 meters, and in the second spring they can be graded.

Above, the editor introduced seven maple varieties. If you are thinking of planting one, you can choose a variety you like to grow. If you like red maple, it happens that the editor also shared the corresponding seedling method for everyone, hoping it can help friends in need.
