How do you select He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum) seeds? What are the seedling-raising methods?
He Shou Wu is a twining herbaceous climbing plant of the Polygonaceae family, a perennial with persistent roots. He Shou Wu is cold-tolerant and can overwinter in the field; it is not demanding about soil, but waterlogging and standing water must be avoided. It is widely distributed in our country and highly adaptable. As the value of He Shou Wu continues to be developed, more and more farmers are growing it. So how do you select He Shou Wu seeds? What are the seedling-raising methods? Let's take a look together below.
1. How do you select He Shou Wu seeds?
For seed-grown He Shou Wu, you need to prepare the seeds. Farmers can select plump seeds; seeds with mold or that are incomplete should be discarded, and seeds stored for too long are best not chosen either, as they will affect the yield and quality of He Shou Wu.
As a major bulk medicinal herb, He Shou Wu can generally be harvested after three years of growing, usually in late spring and in autumn and winter each year. At harvest, first pull out the supports, cut away the He Shou Wu vines, and then dig up the roots.
Freshly dug He Shou Wu looks somewhat like a large sweet potato, with a slightly reddish-brown skin, heavy weight and solid texture. The grades commonly traded on the market are fist He Shou Wu, general He Shou Wu, and He Shou Wu blocks.
2. What seedling-raising methods are there for He Shou Wu?
1. Seed seedling raising
Sowing time is early April. Before sowing, prepare the seedbed, open furrows at a row spacing of 20 cm for drilling, with a furrow depth of 3-5 cm. Scatter the seeds evenly in the furrows, cover thinly with fine soil, just enough to cover the seeds, press down lightly, cover with a layer of brushwood, and then water thoroughly. After sowing, keep the soil moist; seedlings emerge in 10-20 days. After emergence, water once every 2-3 days. At this point, remove the covering grass promptly, and while keeping the bed soil moist, take care to pull out weeds. When the seedlings are 10-13 cm tall, they can be transplanted. Use 1-1.5 kg of seed per mu.
2. Cutting seedling raising
He Shou Wu is mainly propagated by cuttings, planted each year in spring from March to April. Take branches that have grown for 2 years, cut them into 30 cm lengths, insert them into the ridges with the branch tips facing up, then cover the cuttings completely with soil. He Shou Wu is grown mainly on raised ridges, with a ridge spacing of 60 cm. If the temperature after planting reaches 15 degrees, seedlings will emerge in about 15 days.
3. Root and rhizome seedling raising
Each year in August-September or February-March, dig up He Shou Wu tuberous roots. At harvest, choose small tuberous roots with rhizomes for planting, or cut large tuberous roots into several pieces and plant them in loose, fertile, well-drained plots. After planting, water once to settle the roots; after emergence, manage normally. For all the above propagation methods, transplant at a row spacing of 40 cm and a plant spacing of 33 cm, planting 1-2 seedlings per hole.
The above is an introduction to He Shou Wu. He Shou Wu likes to grow on hillside under forest, in valley thickets, and in stone crevices by ditches. It is suitable for planting in southern Shaanxi, southern Gansu, East China, Central China, South China, Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou and other areas. The tuberous root of He Shou Wu can be used as medicine, and it has the effects of nourishing blood and enriching yin, moistening the intestines and relieving constipation, and dispelling wind and removing toxins, so its growing prospects are broad.
