Motherwort, also known as Chongwei, Kuncao, Jiuchonglou, Yunmucao, and other names, is an annual herbaceous plant in the genus Leonurus of the Lamiaceae family. Its dried aerial parts are a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine, with effects such as clearing heat and detoxifying, promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, regulating menstruation, and reducing water retention, and it can be planted in all regions across the country. So how do you select and harvest motherwort seeds? What are the propagation methods? Let's take a look together below.

1. How do you select and harvest motherwort seeds?

To grow motherwort, you can choose fresh seeds from the current year with a germination rate generally above 80%. Before sowing, you can first mix the seeds with wood ash or fine soil and miscellaneous fertilizer, which both ensures the growing nutrients for motherwort and prevents motherwort from being attacked by insect pests.

Motherwort seeds germinate in spring each year when the weather turns warm, and the best time for harvesting is when the motherwort has grown to a height of 10 cm in the early stage.

2. What are the propagation methods for motherwort?

1. Seedbed preparation

Choose a plot that is loose and breathable, well-drained, fertile, sunny, and convenient for irrigation as the propagation site. Apply 2000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure per mu and 20 kg of compound fertilizer with an N-P-K ratio of 15-15-15, plow about 25 cm deep, rake fine and level, then open furrows and make beds at a row spacing of 150 cm, with a bed surface width of 120 cm, a furrow width of 30 cm, and a bed height of 15-20 cm.

2. Sowing

The sowing time is from the end of December to mid-to-late January of the following year. Remove shriveled seeds, soak the seeds for 8-12 hours, take them out and drain the surface water, then evenly mix them with an appropriate amount of dry plant ash or fine sand, evenly broadcast them on the prepared seedbed at a sowing rate of 800 g per mu, water thoroughly, cover with 1 cm of fine soil and press lightly, and build a small arched shed to keep warm and moist. Emergence takes about 45 days.

3. Seedling stage management

Motherwort takes 90-100 days from sowing to transplanting into the field, and the seedling stage is relatively long, so management needs to be strengthened, mainly watering, weeding, and disease prevention and control during the seedling stage. Do not water too much; keeping the soil moist is sufficient. Weeding is generally done once before emergence and 1-2 times after emergence. The main disease during the seedling stage is soft rot, and chemical prevention needs to be strengthened.

4. Field management

Replanting: 5-7 days after transplanting into the field, inspect the survival of the seedlings and replant dead seedlings in time. Intertillage and weeding: carry out intertillage and weeding at the appropriate time, once when the seedlings are 40 cm tall and once when they are 100 cm tall.

Topdressing: combined with intertillage and weeding, apply 15 kg of urea or 2000 kg of thin human and livestock manure per mu.

The above is an introduction to motherwort. The whole motherwort plant can be used as medicine, and the harvesting period for medicinal plants is July-August. In recent years, both the north and south have begun to cultivate motherwort in large quantities. Motherwort is not picky about the growing environment and can be planted anywhere.
