I wonder if any of you have ever drunk golden camellia tea. This plant is not very common, and most of it grows at higher altitudes. When it blooms, it is very showy, and when brewed as tea it has many medicinal benefits. So what superior varieties of golden camellia seeds are there? And what seedling raising methods are there? Next, the editor will tell you all about it!

I. Superior varieties of golden camellia seeds

1. Camellia pubisepala

(also called four-season golden camellia). Although its flower diameter and leaves are rather small and fine, it has won many people's affection with its longer flowering period and its firm, dark black leaves!

2. Camellia pubipetala

Although Camellia pubipetala is not as outstanding as some golden camellias in either ornamental appearance or taste, it is widely rumored among growers that, apart from the ordinary Fangchenggang species which ranks higher than it, Camellia pubipetala has the highest medicinal value!

3. Camellia euphlebia

Camellia euphlebia is further divided into the Vietnam type and the Fangcheng type. It is prized for its golden yellow flower color, large flower diameter, and broad, unusual leaves! Apart from the clasping-stem flower which is slightly larger than it, no other variety has flowers as large as this one!

4. Ordinary Fangchenggang species

Among these, the medium-leaf and small-leaf types are the most beautiful! The medium-leaf and small-leaf ordinary Fangchenggang golden camellia, with its strong waxy feel, high yield, and flower and leaf shapes that both give a strong visual impression, as well as its mellow taste, golden yellow color, extremely high medicinal value, and crystal-clear appearance, has earned the title of queen of the tea family;

5. Vietnam medium-leaf concave-vein golden camellia

The Vietnam medium-leaf concave-vein golden camellia is further divided into two subspecies, the red-top concave-vein and the yellow-calyx concave-vein, but their leaf shape is the same! And their flower quantity is the same. With its bright golden yellow color, the yellow-calyx type has even its flower stalks in golden yellow, while the red-top type has a touch of red on the petals when blooming as an ornament, making it especially beautiful! The flowers are large and the quantity is high (the same as the ordinary Fangcheng species). Whenever it blooms, the flowers hang along the branches in clusters, and both the leaves and flowers have a mellow taste, making it the variety closest to the ordinary Fangchenggang golden camellia!

II. Seedling raising methods for golden camellia seeds

1. Branch selection

In March and April or October and November each year, cut one-year-old or more than two-year-old hard branches from old Fangpu century golden camellia trees, fully lignified, robustly growing branches with plump terminal buds. Note that unbursted branches and mature branches are used; newly sprouted tender branches that have not yet lignified are not selected. After collecting them, prune the branches as soon as possible, avoiding direct sunlight and wind so as to prevent the branches from losing water. The cutting period is spring cutting or autumn cutting. Put the cut cuttings in clean plastic bags, seal the openings, and maintain humidity;

2. Branch pretreatment

Cut the branches into 10-15 cm lengths, cut the top end flat, and trim the bottom end into a horseshoe shape, then tie them into bundles. Before cutting, cut flatly at 0.3 cm above the axillary bud of each node of the cutting, cutting them into cuttings with one leaf and one bud each. The leaves must remain intact. The length of the cuttings can be determined according to the length of the intervals between axillary buds. Soak the bottom part of the branches (1/3 of the branch) in a 2000-fold ABT No. 1 rooting agent solution for 6 hours. During branch pretreatment, the upper and lower cut surfaces must be smooth. The trimmed cuttings are bundled 50 to a bundle, laid flat and kept moist for the next step of chemical treatment. The branches collected must be treated the same day and cut the same day. Those that cannot all be cut the same day must be kept moist to prevent the branches from being squeezed and heating up, and must be cut promptly the next day to prevent splitting of the epidermis and xylem, so as to avoid water accumulation and rot that would affect healing and rooting. If kept too long, the rooting rate of the cuttings will be reduced.

3. Substrate selection

For the substrate, use sieved yellow-heart soil, coconut coir, peat soil, and river sand mixed evenly in a 7:1:1:1 ratio, put into nutrient cups and arranged in rows, with a 40 cm walkway left between each row for easy care. When selecting the substrate, before inserting the cuttings, water the substrate thoroughly with hymexazol for disinfection treatment, eliminating various bacteria and viruses inside the substrate to ensure that the cuttings have a good growing environment.

4. Cutting

Insert the soaked branches into the treated substrate, then water once. The shade of the seedbed should be above 80%. The force used when cutting should be moderate, so as not to break the bark and affect the survival rate. The cutting depth is 3-5 cm. After cutting, keep the sandy soil level, in order to prevent the substrate from compacting and lacking oxygen during frequent watering in the future, which is unfavorable for the cuttings to root. After cutting, be careful to water enough; the first watering is done 2 hours after cutting, and the water must be thorough;

5. Management after cutting

Install a spray system and spray once each morning and evening to keep the seedbed moist. Roots form in about 45 days, and new shoots can grow in about 90 days. After new shoots grow, spray potassium dihydrogen phosphate to promote their growth;

6. Transplanting seedlings

Sort the seedlings that have rooted in the first stage of cutting, select seedlings whose root systems are relatively lignified for transplanting, and transplant them onto the required foundation. When transplanting, the roots of the seedlings should be spread out. After transplanting, water with a sufficient amount, thoroughly. When transplanting seedlings, the substrate also needs to be selected before transplanting, keeping the substrate moist and having good light transmittance and ventilation. Often spread 1 to 2 cm of fine river sand at the bottom of the substrate to ensure good growing conditions after transplanting, with good ventilation and drainage at the bottom so the roots are not prone to water accumulation and rot.

7. Seedling stage management

After transplanting, keep sufficient humidity inside the shed and keep the leaf surfaces moist. If the temperature is relatively high, carry out appropriate spraying. Two weeks after transplanting, according to the growth situation, spray foliar fertilizer, and thereafter spray once every 8 to 11 days. At the same time, compound fertilizer is needed for topdressing, with the compound fertilizer mixed with water at 3% to 5%, applying fertilizer once every 45 to 55 days. During the seedling stage, pay attention to the growth of the seedlings. Generally, spray Bordeaux mixture, carbendazim, chlorothalonil and other chemicals once every half month. After about 3 months, they can be transplanted to the mountains for planting.

Alright, that is all the content the editor wants to share with you. Above, the editor introduced five varieties of golden camellia in detail. They each have different characteristics, and if you want to plant them you can choose according to their characteristics. If you do not know how to raise seedlings, you can also refer to the methods above.
