In the natural world, there are many varieties of trees. I wonder if you are familiar with Euonymus bungeanus. It has strong adaptability, a fairly wide distribution range, high ornamental value, and a very wide range of uses. So how do you select Euonymus bungeanus seeds? What are the seedling-growing methods? If you want to know, read on!

1. How do you select Euonymus bungeanus seeds?

Choose mature, intact, fresh seeds; do not take old, rotten seeds no matter how cheap they are. Only sowing high-quality seeds can produce more vigorous sprouting, and the trees will also grow very lushly, thereby creating greater value and yielding higher returns.

2. Seedling-growing methods for Euonymus bungeanus

1. Seed collection

For the mother trees for seed collection, choose robust 20-year-old or older mature trees with smooth bark, free of pests and diseases, and never stripped of bark. Around mid-November, when the fruit skin turns brown and glossy, collect the seeds. The collected seeds should be placed in a ventilated place to dry in the shade; do not dry them over fire or expose them to the hot sun.

2. Germination promotion treatment

Seeds sown in spring can be treated for germination promotion by the following two methods: First, 30-50 d before sowing, mix the seeds with 10 times their volume of wet sand, spread it on the indoor floor at a thickness of 30-40 cm, keep it moist, and sow when the seeds show white. Second, soak the seeds in warm water at 20-30°C or in cold water for 2-3 d, changing the water once each day; after removing the seeds, pile them in a sunny place and use the "bean sprout" method for germination promotion, turning them 3-5 times each day and sprinkling an appropriate amount of water, and sow when 30% of the seeds show white. Autumn sowing does not require germination promotion.

3. Land preparation

The sowing site should be sandy soil with deep, loose, fertile, moist soil, and it must be deeply plowed, fertilized, and disinfected. Continuous cropping is not suitable, otherwise leaf spot disease will occur. Level the seedling-growing land into bottom beds of (4-6) x (4-6) m in size and irrigate; the ridge height is 15-20 cm. When the soil is no longer sticky, loosen and rake the soil in the beds level, and tread the field ridges firm and make them straight.

4. Sowing

Use low beds for drilling, with furrow depth 5 cm, row spacing 30 cm, covering soil 1-2 cm, and cover with rice straw; the sowing rate is 150 kg/hm 2 . Seeds treated by sand storage will germinate and emerge about 20 d after sowing.

5. Seedling-stage management

(1) Watering

After sowing, water appropriately according to soil moisture, always keep the bed surface moist, and prevent the seeds from drying out and the seedlings from sunscald. However, do not allow waterlogging to form or cause soil compaction; if there is too much water, drain it promptly. When the seedlings grow to 3-4 cm tall, remove the mulch in stages on cloudy days or in the evening. Stop watering after September, and irrigate sufficiently with bottom water before freezing.

(2) Loosening soil and weeding

After irrigation and after rain, loosen the soil and weed promptly. Weed between rows together with soil loosening, and pull weeds between plants by hand. Following the principle of "weed early, weed small, weed completely," eliminate weeds in the bud.

(3) Fertilizing

Along with watering, topdress 2-3 times. In the early stage of seedling growth, apply nitrogen fertilizer to promote seedling growth; in the later stage of growth, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to promote lignification of the seedlings.

(4) Thinning and replanting

To ensure the quality and yield of the seedlings, thinning and replanting must be done promptly according to the situation. The principle of thinning is to keep the superior and remove the inferior, and keep the sparse and remove the dense. The targets for thinning are seedlings damaged by pests or diseases, mechanically injured, poorly growing, or overly dense. Replanting is best done on rainy days or in the evening. Water promptly after replanting, and provide appropriate shading if necessary.
