Fritillaria is a perennial herbaceous plant whose bulbs are used medicinally. It is named for its shape and is a very common category of traditional Chinese medicinal material in our country, with effects of relieving cough and resolving phlegm, clearing heat and reducing nodules. It has a wide range of values and uses, and is therefore extremely popular in the market. At present, Fritillaria is mainly distributed in Qinghai, Sichuan, Yunnan, the Qinba Mountains of Shaanxi, Gansu and other provinces and regions, and the varieties cultivated vary from place to place. So what high-quality varieties of Fritillaria seeds are there? What are the seedling cultivation methods? Let's take a look together.

What high-quality varieties of Fritillaria seeds are there?

Fritillaria is mainly divided into Fritillaria cirrhosa, Fritillaria thunbergii, Bolbostemma paniculatum, Fritillaria pallidiflora and other varieties, among which Fritillaria cirrhosa and Fritillaria thunbergii are the most common.

1. Fritillaria cirrhosa: named because it is mainly produced in Sichuan, but it is also produced in Tibet, Gansu, Xinjiang, North China and Northeast China.

2. Fritillaria thunbergii: named because it is mainly produced in Zhejiang, hence the abbreviation Zhebei. It is also produced in Jiangsu, Anhui, Hunan and other places.

3. Bolbostemma paniculatum: mainly produced in Hebei, Shaanxi, Shanxi and other places.

4. Xinjiang Fritillaria: including several varieties such as Fritillaria iliensis, Fritillaria ferganensis and Fritillaria karelinii, collectively known as Xinjiang Fritillaria.

What are the seedling cultivation methods?

1. Seed collection and treatment

When the Fritillaria plants begin to wither and the capsules turn from green to yellow, choose a sunny midday and cut off the mature capsules in batches, arrange them neatly, tie them into small bundles, dry them, and remove the seeds. Remove the fruit shells and shriveled grains, mix the seeds with moist sand at a ratio of 3:1 (volume ratio), and stratify them in a pit or wooden box under the forest or indoors. Turn and mix the stratified seeds about every 10 days to keep the pit (box) moderately and evenly moist.

2. Sowing

Because the bulbs of one- to two-year-old Fritillaria seedlings are small, dense sowing is suitable, evenly broadcasting on the bed surface, with the degree that the seeds do not overlap, requiring about 25 kg of seeds per mu. After sowing the seeds, immediately cover with sifted humus soil or decomposed, sifted compost powder, about 2 cm thick, and then cover with a layer of rice straw or wheat straw to help preserve moisture.

3. Seedbed management

After the early spring thaw, before the seedlings emerge, remove the covering grass, gently rake the surface soil of the seedbed loose, and then cover with grass again. When about 20% of the seedlings have emerged, remove the covering grass. After emergence, apply once a topdressing of decomposed dilute human and animal manure water or 0.5% urea solution to promote seedling growth, and apply once more in late April to promote bulb growth. In addition, one- to two-year-old seedlings are afraid of strong sunlight, so a movable low shed should be built for shade, with about 50% shade density, and the shed should be removed on cloudy and rainy days to harden the seedlings.

4. Transplanting

For the field used for transplanting, the land should likewise be prepared and fertilized, with trenches opened and beds made, using the drill sowing method. After fertilizing, first spread a thin layer of humus soil or fine soil in the trench, then place the small bulbs in the shallow trench, with a plant spacing of about 3 cm. Cover the bed surface with rice straw, crop stalks or small branches. Generally, after transplanting for 1 to 2 years, they can be dug and processed, and most of the commercial specifications reach the first-grade standard.

In general, only by mastering the cultivation techniques of Fritillaria can you grow Fritillaria with high yield and good quality. Of course, in the early stage, you must choose suitable varieties for cultivation according to local growing conditions, improve land utilization, and thereby achieve increased production and income.
