Zinnia is also called youth-and-old-age, fireball flower, opposite-leaf chrysanthemum, autumn gauze, and so on. It is a famous ornamental plant with flowers in diverse colors, and it is also divided into single-petaled, double-petaled, curled-leaf, and wrinkled-leaf types. It is cultivated throughout China. So if you want to grow zinnias, seeds where are they sold? How do you raise seedlings? Let's take a look below.

Where are zinnia seeds sold?

Zinnia seeds are very easy to buy. Generally, they are sold in flower markets everywhere, and they can also be purchased through seed sellers or online. But if you want to buy large quantities of zinnia seeds, then you must choose the seller carefully to ensure seed quality. It is best to buy from a large, legitimate local seed seller, as both quality and after-sales service are guaranteed. The seed price of zinnia is relatively cheap, at about fifty-five yuan per jin, so the planting cost is not high. If the purchase quantity is very large, the seed price can be even cheaper, and buying wholesale is very cost-effective.

How do you raise zinnia seedlings?

1. Sowing

The sowing time is usually controlled from June to July, and there are also autumn sowing experiments. Due to factors such as temperature, autumn sowing is generally not adopted because it has a certain effect on flower color and plant form. The sowing medium is a loose artificial medium. When conditions permit, seedbed sowing, tray sowing, or plug seedling raising can be used. After disinfection treatment, the sowing medium is kept at 23℃ for 4 days for emergence.

2. Seedling raising

Three days after sowing, the radicle will show. The medium should be relatively dry, but at this stage it is very important to maintain moisture around the seeds and sufficient oxygen content, so after sowing, covering with a thin layer of coarse vermiculite is very beneficial to seed germination. The covering thickness is such that the seeds cannot be seen. For open seedling raising, a shade net must be used to ensure humidity and lower the temperature. No fertilization is needed at this stage.

3. Soil requirements

When the zinnia main root grows to 2 cm, the cotyledons unfold, and the first pair of true leaves begins to grow, the seedlings can gradually be exposed to light. Fertilization can begin, generally using 0.05% urea to promote vegetative growth. Keep the soil relatively moist, neither too wet nor too dry. Too wet easily causes disease, and too dry causes the seedlings to wilt.

4. Seedling management

When the seedlings enter the rapid growth stage, water management should be strengthened, carrying out a cycle from dry to wet and then to dry. This is beneficial to the growth of the seedling root system and can also avoid excessive growth. At this stage, attention should be paid to the prevention and control of pests and diseases, and compound fertilizer should be applied appropriately. When conditions permit, the temperature of the medium and environment should be appropriately lowered to about 20℃. However, under protected seedbed sowing conditions, the temperature is difficult to control at sowing time. This stage also requires a full-light environment; otherwise, it easily leads to excessive seedling growth. According to the growth of the seedlings during the seedling stage, the moisture content should be properly controlled, and attention should be paid to ventilation in the broader environment to prevent disease.

5. Transplanting

When the root system has formed well and there are 3 pairs of true leaves, excessive growth will appear. B9 should be sprayed immediately to control height. The temperature and humidity requirements are the same as in the third stage. After the seedling hardening stage, the seedlings can be transplanted into flower pots.

Zinnia flowers are very gorgeous. They are a regular variety at wedding photography bases, often used in flower beds and gardens, and can also be used as cut flowers, with extremely high ornamental value. Zinnia blooms are bright and colorful and the flowering period is very long. From June to September the flowers will open one after another, and the flower color will always remain bright. Therefore, zinnia symbolizes everlasting friendship.
