We are all familiar with bee pupae. Because they are rich in protein and various nutrients, they are much loved by many foodies and are a top-quality delicacy. At present, the market price of bee pupae is relatively high. Friends who raise bees all know that the most suitable bees for producing bee pupae are drones. So where are bee pupae sold? What are the harvesting methods for bee pupae? Let's take a look together below.

2. What are the harvesting methods for bee pupae?

1. Preparation of drone comb

Drone foundation is specially produced by manufacturers. Its size is the same as worker bee foundation; only the cell size is different. So we can buy drone foundation, then install it on a frame, and place it in a strong colony for rearing during the main honey flow period or when there is a large amount of auxiliary nectar source.

2. Restricting the queen from laying eggs

Since we want to obtain uniform drones, we need to control the queen to lay eggs on the drone comb we have prepared. Generally there are two ways to control this: one is to use a frame-type queen excluder, and the other is to use a queen egg-laying controller (which can hold one comb frame), then confine the queen to lay eggs on the drone comb. Place the drone comb we have made between the larval comb and the sealed brood comb, first letting worker bees move freely in and out of the drone comb we made, and clean it for one day. On the second day, put the queen into the controller to lay eggs. After the queen has been confined in the controller to lay eggs for 36 hours, return her to the brood-rearing area, and then place the drone comb on which the queen has laid eggs into the super box for worker bees to incubate.

3. Removing the bee pupae

Generally, drones emerge in about 24 days, so we can take out the bees before the drones emerge. At this time the bee pupae are relatively hard and large in size, so it is better to take them out when the bee pupae reach 21 to 22 days of age, when no young bees have emerged and the bee pupae are also fully developed.

4. Harvesting bee pupae

After we take out the bee pupae, we must first do a good job of cleaning and disinfection, then put the bee pupae into a freezer for cold treatment. Just refrigerate for five or six minutes, then take them out and use an uncapping knife to cut off the sealed caps. Turn over the cut side and tap the comb frame with a wooden stick, so the bee pupae fall out of the cells, and our pupa extraction process is complete.

The above is an introduction to bee pupae. Standard bee pupa production generally chooses drone pupae, because drones are larger and do not play much role in the colony. Properly removing drone pupae is beneficial to the colony, so drone pupae can be used to produce bee pupae.
