Arisaema is the medicinal underground tuber of a herbaceous plant in the Araceae family, a commonly used Chinese herbal medicine variety with very large market demand. It holds an indispensable place in the pharmaceutical field. It is mainly distributed in Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangxi, Hunan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Hebei and other places. It grows in valleys, on riverbanks, in grasslands, among thickets and under bamboo groves. So how do you select Arisaema seeds? What seedling raising methods are there? Let's take a look together below.

1. How to select Arisaema seeds?

After the Arisaema seeds mature, collect the red berries and place them in clean water, rub and wash away the fruit pulp, then take out the seeds. When farmers grow Arisaema, they can first treat the seeds; after drying them in the sun, select plump seeds without defects and discard the ones that are not plump and have mold or poor quality.

2. What seedling raising methods are there for Arisaema?

1. Tuber seedling raising

At the autumn harvest, select small tubers that are free of pests and diseases, robust, and intact without damage. After drying in the shade, store them in a cellar, keeping the cellar temperature at 5-10 degrees C. If the temperature is below 5 degrees C, the tubers are easily damaged; if above 10 degrees C, they tend to sprout early, which is not good for tuber propagation. In March to April of the second year, on a prepared seedbed, place the tubers at a row spacing of 25 cm, plant spacing of 15 cm, and depth of 5 cm, with the buds facing up. Then cover with soil, and then cover with plastic film. One tuber can be divided into several pieces, and each piece must have 1 robust bud. Before sowing the tubers, treat them with plant ash, which has a sterilizing effect and prevents rot.

2. Seed seedling raising

Every year in August to September, after the Arisaema seeds mature and are harvested, wash the berries with water, take out the seeds, and sow them immediately. Sprinkle the seeds on a seedbed prepared in advance, sowing about 5 seeds per 100 cm2, and cover with rare earth. In winter, cover the seedbed with decomposed, finely crushed barnyard manure to maintain temperature and humidity, which helps them overwinter. In the spring of the second year, when the seedlings are 6-10 cm tall, they can be transplanted.

3. Transplanting

In April, when the seedlings are 6 cm to 9 cm tall, choose a cloudy day and transplant the robust young seedlings, with a little soil ball attached, into the field at a row spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm, then water once after planting to settle the roots.

The above is an introduction to Arisaema. Except for the northwest and Tibet, Arisaema is distributed in most provinces and regions, mainly growing under forests, in thickets or in grasslands. Arisaema is one of the Chinese medicines with a long history, and farmers must master the relevant seedling raising methods when planting it.
