Seed Selection Tips and Seedling Methods for Trident Maple
Trident maple, also called three-lobed maple, is a medium-to-large deciduous tree and one of the common categories among greening tree species in China. Trident maple is produced in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China, and is cultivated in the Yellow River basin. It is suitable as a shade tree, street tree, and bank-protection tree species, and can also be planted as a hedge. So how do you select trident maple seeds? What seedling methods are there? Let's learn together.
How do you select trident maple seeds?
When trident maple fruits mature, harvest mature fruits whose samaras are brownish yellow or brown, select seeds that are plump, not damaged or deformed, and free of pests and diseases, remove impurities, and dry them slightly. Trident maple seeds are generally medium in size and have very good emergence ability. Before sowing, you can simply do some pregermination methods: soak them in warm water for one day, then take them out and dry them off before preparing them for sowing. The sowing depth should be moderate or relatively shallow, and the soil covering thickness should be no more than 3 cm. Most people use sowing in rows, and they can generally germinate in about 7-11 days.
What seedling methods are there?
1. Nursery site selection
To cultivate trident maple seedlings, you should choose high-quality fields with loose and well-aerated soil, rich in organic matter, flat terrain, and smooth drainage. The main point of the terrain is that it helps with drainage, otherwise when the rainy season comes and the amount of water increases, large-scale seedling death is likely to occur. Ordinary soil quality is fine, and with sufficient light, trident maple is cold-resistant, not afraid of drought, and has very good waterlogging tolerance.
2. Land preparation and deep plowing
Deep plow the soil twice, respectively in late autumn of the previous year and at the end of February of the following year. Before each deep plowing, apply farmyard manure and quick-acting compound fertilizer respectively. The amount of farmyard manure is 18 t/hectare, and the amount of quick-acting compound fertilizer is 700 kg/hectare. Two deep plowings and fertilizations can significantly improve the soil structure of the sowing garden and prepare the ground for sowing.
3. Sowing and seedling raising
Trident maple can be sown in spring or autumn. Sowing in rows can be used, with a sowing rate of about 3-4 kg per mu. Trident maple seedlings need soil covering. The covering thickness is 1 cm to 2 cm. Water by spray, and just water thoroughly.
4. Seedling-stage management
Trident maple has very strong resistance, and there are few diseases during the seedling growth period. The main work is only watering, fertilizing, and clearing weeds. About 25 days after sowing, the germination rate of trident maple can reach about 80%. At this time, the seedlings need to be thinned, and diseased and unhealthy seedlings should be pulled out. When most trident maple seedlings have grown 3 or more leaves, they can be transplanted.
In general, there are three commonly used propagation methods for trident maple: sowing and seedling raising, cutting propagation, and layering propagation. Among them, sowing and seedling raising can raise seedlings in large quantities and is easy to maintain, so it is the most common.
