A Complete Guide to Selecting and Growing Money Tree Seeds
The money tree (Pachira aquatica) is an evergreen small tree of the family Malvaceae and a very common potted tree species. Thanks to its name, it has become a favorite among households and business users. Combined with its beautiful plant form and high ornamental value, the money tree currently occupies an important position in China's flower market. Many people like to grow money trees, so how should its seeds be selected? What are the seedling-growing methods? Let's find out together.
How to select money tree seeds?
Before cultivating a money tree, first select high-quality seeds, as the germination rate will be higher and the resulting plants will be more robust. There are many places to buy money tree seeds - regular flower markets and online e-commerce platforms both work, just be sure to choose legitimate channels. In addition, when selecting seeds, it is best to buy the money tree fruit directly; if you buy seeds, they may no longer be fresh after harvesting, transport and storage. Since money trees are distributed in tropical regions, it is best not to choose shops from the north when buying seeds.
What are the seedling-growing methods?
1. Seed treatment
Place the money tree fruit in the sun to dry; once the seeds are dried, the fruit will burst open on its own, revealing a dozen or so chestnut-like seeds. Wash the collected seeds clean and soak them in water to sprout. Usually within a few hours the seed coat will crack, and once the small sprouts emerge, they are ready for sowing.
2. Sowing
Branches can tolerate temperatures above 20°C, so sowing is possible at any time. Before sowing, prepare a pot of suitable size - it can be a flower pot, plastic bottle, porcelain pot, etc. Money trees prefer fertile, loose, well-drained sandy soil. For young plants, use garden soil, leaf mold and sand in a 4:4:2 ratio; for established money trees, use garden soil and sand in a 5:5 ratio.
For sowing, cover with about 1-2 cm of soil. After sowing, water thoroughly (the pot must drain well, do not let water accumulate) and place in a semi-shaded environment, then choose whether to cover with film depending on the temperature. Under conditions of high temperature and high humidity, the germination rate will be higher. From sowing to germination generally takes about 10 days.
3. Raising seedlings
The seedling-raising method generally uses cutting propagation. Take the money tree cuttings cut from the whole plant, air-dry them, and control the moisture content at 52%. After 3 days, soak them in a 0.1% Cu2+ solution for 12 min. After removing them, they can undergo normal cutting growth under conditions of 24°C, 50% humidity and 50% shading. Insert about 5 cm into the soil; the soil is a mixed substrate of river sand and perlite in a volume ratio of 2:3.
4. Care
Throughout the entire growing process, money tree seedlings propagated from seed can be placed 3-5 per pot when potting up. Money trees should be pruned once a year. Pruning is generally combined with repotting. Once the money tree has taken shape, begin repotting. When repotting, some of the old soil can be removed, use a slightly larger pot, first place some base fertilizer at the bottom of the pot, then add new potting soil and replant.
In fact, growing a money tree well is not all that difficult; the key lies in mastering the techniques, especially proper management during the seedling stage, and then a lush potted money tree is basically established. A money tree you grow yourself from seed has better adaptability, stronger disease resistance and is more robust than one bought from a flower market.
