How to select false indigo (Amorpha fruticosa) seeds? What are the seedling raising methods?
In nature there are many kinds of flowers and trees. I wonder which kinds of trees everyone knows. Today, the editor will mainly talk about false indigo (Amorpha fruticosa). Although it has a certain toxicity, it also has many medicinal effects and can treat a variety of diseases. So how should false indigo seeds be selected? What are the seedling raising methods? Friends who want to know, read on quickly!
1. How to select false indigo seeds?
False indigo seeds should be selected for passing quality and plump grains. Do not be greedy for cheapness and buy seeds of poor quality. Go to a local store that specializes in selling seeds. If there is no suitable place locally, you can also buy from our Nongxun Network.
2. Seedling raising methods for false indigo seeds
1. Overview of the seedling raising site
The seedling raising site was set up in the vegetable garden of Ma'anshan, located in the central part of the Songnen Plain. The geographical coordinates are longitude 124°35′, latitude 44°40′, altitude 126m, annual average temperature 3.8°C, annual precipitation 430mm, frost-free period 120-150d, and the soil texture of the seedling raising site is loam.
2. Seed collection
For the seed collection of false indigo, first select excellent mother plants that grow vigorously and are free of pests and diseases for seed collection. The fruit ripening period is September to October. The pod is oval, slightly curved, brown when mature, and contains 1-2 oval or long kidney-shaped seeds, smooth, yellow-green, with a hard seed coat.
3. Seed treatment
The pod skin of false indigo contains oil, the seeds are hard, there are many hard seeds, they do not easily absorb water and air, and germination is slow. In order to make the seedlings emerge neatly, shorten the emergence period, and increase the seed germination rate, the seeds must be treated.
4. Land preparation and bed making
False indigo seedlings have the ability to tolerate drought and resist waterlogging, and have no strict requirements for soil conditions. However, in production, in order to cultivate strong seedlings, we choose a vegetable garden with flat terrain, good drainage, convenient irrigation, deep soil, and relatively fertile soil as the sowing site. In the autumn of the previous year, the sowing plot was deep plowed 30cm so that the soil layer was fully weathered. In early April of the following year, before sowing, the land was carefully prepared and sufficient base fertilizer was applied. For every 667m2, 1500-2000kg of fully decomposed organic fertilizer and 15k of compound fertilizer were applied. Then shallow plowing and leveling were carried out, and a flat bed 1.2m wide and 10m long was made, oriented north-south. The bed surface should be level and the soil should be fine and crumbly.
5. Sowing
The day before sowing, water the bed surface thoroughly with bottom water, then pour 1 part each of quintozene and zineb into a watering can, stir fully, and spray 10g per 667m2 on the bed surface for soil disinfection. On the second day, use furrow drilling along the bed with wide-row drilling so that the seedlings receive light evenly. The furrow depth is 2-3cm, the width is 10cm, and the row spacing is 20cm. After opening the furrows, level the bottom of the furrows with your feet, evenly scatter the seeds into the furrows, and cover while sowing (sifted fine soil). The covering soil thickness is 1-1.5cm, and the thickness should be uniform and consistent to facilitate neat emergence. Water thoroughly, cover with straw curtains in time, and keep the soil moist. After 60% of the seedlings have emerged, remove the straw curtains in time.
6. Seedling stage management
(1) Thinning
When the seedlings are 3-5cm tall, remove pest- and disease-damaged seedlings, thin and weak seedlings, and double seedlings growing densely together, removing the inferior and keeping the superior. When the seedlings are 6-8cm tall, carry out a second thinning, removing the dense and keeping the sparse, so as to achieve moderate density and even distribution, which is beneficial for ventilation and light transmission and promotes seedling growth and development.
(2) Watering
False indigo begins to emerge about one week after sowing. If the bed soil is dry before emergence, water promptly and appropriately, and never water over the top of the seedlings. After each thinning, water promptly to prevent the seedling roots from being exposed to air. The bed soil should not be too wet, so as to avoid excessive seedling growth or disease. In the early stage of seedling growth, the aboveground part of the nursery stock and the root system begin to grow and form a root system, but the distribution is relatively shallow. If the bed soil lacks water, it can easily cause seedling death. At this time, keep the surface bed soil often moist, appropriately increase the amount of watering, and the number of waterings can be correspondingly reduced. From the rapid growth period of the nursery stock to the end of the rapid growth period, the nursery stock grows fast and requires a lot of water. A method of fewer times and larger amounts can be adopted to fully meet the water needed for the rapid growth of the nursery stock. In the later stage of nursery stock growth, in order to prevent the nursery stock from excessive late-season growth and to make the nursery stock fully lignified, watering should be stopped.
(3) Topdressing
After the seedlings emerge and in the initial growth stage, spray 1-2 times of Dafeibao, with a concentration of 0.1% as appropriate. During the rapid growth period of the nursery stock, appropriately apply 1-2 times of urea, 10kg per 667m2 and an appropriate amount of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, to prevent excessive late-season growth of the nursery stock and promote full lignification of the nursery stock. In the later stage of nursery stock growth, stop topdressing to promote full lignification of the nursery stock and ensure the nursery stock safely overwinters.
(4) Cultivation and weeding
After the seedlings emerge completely, loosen the soil and weed in time. When weeding, to prevent injuring the seedlings, pull them by hand as much as possible. During the nursery stock growth period, cultivate and weed about 3-4 times throughout the year. Keep the soil loose and prevent weeds from competing with the nursery stock for water and nutrients. False indigo rarely has pests and diseases. Once they occur, use insecticides and fungicides for timely control to prevent spread.
Alright, that is all for the content the editor wants to share with you today. If you also plan to plant false indigo, choose seeds that are as high quality as possible. It is recommended not to buy inferior ones just because they are cheap. Above, the editor also shared in detail the relevant false indigo seedling raising methods, hoping to help everyone.
