What are the citrus-producing regions? A brief introduction to China's eight major citrus-producing regions
Our country is the place of origin of citrus, with a cultivation history of 2500 years, and citrus is now grown in many regions. China's citrus planting area is nearly 40 million mu, and its planting area and output rank first in the world. With so many regions growing citrus, do you know where the citrus-producing regions are distributed? Below is an introduction to China's eight major citrus-producing regions.
1. Deqing Gonggan (Emperor Mandarin)
Gonggan, known as the "King of Chinese Mandarin," also called Emperor Mandarin, was listed by the imperial court during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127 AD) as a tribute for the emperor's personal use because of its excellent quality, hence the name "Gonggan." Many regions grow Gonggan, and Deqing, Guangdong is its main place of origin. Among all major producing areas across the country, the "Deqing Gonggan" brand is the strongest, and it is known as the "Hometown of Chinese Gonggan."
2. Sihui Shatangju of Guangdong
Shatangju, originally named October Mandarin, is named Shatangju because it is as sweet as granulated sugar. Shatangju can be said to be one of consumers' favorite citrus fruits and has long been the dominant force in the citrus field, with an authority that cannot be challenged. When mentioning Shatangju, one must mention Sihui Shatangju of Guangdong, the hometown of Chinese Shatangju, the place of origin of Shatangju, and the most authentic Shatangju-producing region.
3. Gannan Navel Orange
Gannan Navel Orange is a specialty of Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province. In 2003, it received national geographical indication product protection, covering the entire Ganzhou City jurisdiction. Its navel orange area ranks first in the world, and it is the largest navel orange-producing region in the country. In 2017, Gannan Navel Orange was included in the China-EU "100+100" mutual recognition protection list.
4. Huaihua Bingtang Orange
Bingtang Orange, also known as Bingtang Mandarin, originated in Qianyang County, Hunan, which is now Hongjiang City. Locally it is called Bingtang Pao, and it has won the status of China National Geographical Indication Product. It is cultivated throughout the entire Huaihua region, including Mayang, Zhijiang, and Hongjiang. Bingtang Orange has a rich, sweet taste, thin peel, and crisp, tender flesh, and is very popular. Yuan Longping, academician and father of China's hybrid rice, even specifically endorsed Huaihua Bingtang Orange on CCTV, which shows just how good its quality is.
5. Nanfeng Mandarin
Nanfeng Mandarin is produced in Nanfeng County, Jiangxi Province. It is a high-quality citrus native to our country and has a cultivation history of several hundred years. Not only does it taste very good, but its shape is plump and round, and its color is quite attractive. Because the entire Nanfeng County grows mandarins, Nanfeng County has also been honored with the beautiful title "Hometown of Chinese Nanfeng Mandarin."
6. Guangxi Lipu Shatangju
Lipu Shatangju was successfully introduced and trial-planted from Guangdong in 1995. Due to Lipu's unique geography, climate, and soil, it is very suitable for Shatangju production. The fruit grown there is sweeter, tastes better, and has brighter color, achieving the best fruit quality. In 2006, Lipu Shatangju passed pollution-free agricultural product origin certification and product certification. In 2015, it was included in the national catalog of famous, special, excellent, and new agricultural products, and on September 1, 2017, it obtained national geographical indication protection product certification.
7. Wenzhou Mandarin
Wenzhou has a history of cultivating citrus for more than 2400 years. During the Tang Dynasty, Wenzhou citrus was listed as a tribute. Wenzhou Mandarin has strong stress resistance, wide adaptability, and can produce early, high, and stable yields, with good quality and easy cultivation. In particular, Wutian District in Ouhai County is a traditional citrus-producing area, and mandarin cultivation is also most concentrated there, so it is known as the "Hometown of Citrus."
8. Yichang Mandarin
Yichang Mandarin has tender flesh, is seedless, of good quality, and is sweet and sour. It is a specialty of Yichang City, Hubei Province, and a national agricultural product geographical indication. On September 1, 2017, the former Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China approved the registration and protection of "Yichang Mandarin" as a national agricultural product geographical indication. In November 2019, it was selected as a regional public brand for specialty agricultural products with Chinese characteristics.
