A Detailed Guide to Yellow Rosewood Seed Varieties and Propagation Methods
Yellow rosewood has the scientific name Dalbergia odorifera, and together with red sandalwood, chicken-wing wood, and ironwood, it is known as one of the four great famous woods of ancient China. It originates from the low-altitude plains and hilly areas of Diaoluoshan and Jianfengling on Hainan Island, China. Because of its solid wood and beautiful grain, it is highly favored by the market, and it also has certain medicinal properties. However, because yellow rosewood grows slowly, it is not widely cultivated at present. So what varieties of yellow rosewood seeds are there? What are the propagation methods? Let's find out together.
What varieties of yellow rosewood seeds are there?
There are still many kinds of yellow rosewood seeds, but among the many categories, only Hainan yellow rosewood can truly be called Dalbergia odorifera. In addition, there is also Vietnamese yellow rosewood, which is easily confused with Hainan yellow rosewood. There is also large-leaf yellow rosewood, a new tree species discovered in Indonesia, as well as varieties such as South American rosewood, African rosewood, and red rosewood. It can be said that yellow rosewood varieties are diverse and varied, and among them, Hainan in China mainly uses Dalbergia odorifera as one of the main afforestation tree species.
What are the propagation methods?
1. Seed collection and selection
Yellow rosewood seeds cannot be stored for a long time. It is best to sow them as soon as they are collected, otherwise the seed yield and germination rate will be affected.
2. Planting time
Spring afforestation is generally chosen. However, there are differences in temperature among regions: in rainy spring areas such as Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi, it is suitable to plant from March to May. If there is a water source for irrigation, planting bagged seedlings from September to October is also possible; the planting season in Hainan Province is relatively later, and August to September is the best afforestation season.
3. Seedling cultivation
Before sowing, the seedbed should be leveled, and it is best to spray the seedbed with potassium permanganate or thiophanate for disinfection. Rosewood seeds germinate easily. Before sowing, soak the seeds in clean water for 24 hours, remove them and dry them, then evenly broadcast the seeds on the bed surface, and then cover with fine soil (preferably crushed dry cow dung) about 1cm. After the seeds are sown, water them in the morning and evening to keep the seedbed properly moist. They germinate in about half a month.
4. Seedling transplanting
When the cotyledons of yellow rosewood seedlings turn green and the true leaves begin to grow (about 20 to 30 days after the seeds germinate), they can be transplanted into nutrition bags.
5. Seedling tending
In the same year after planting, carry out loosening of the soil and weeding once at the end of the rainy season (September). Starting from the second year and for the following 3 years, tending management should be strengthened. Method: centered on the seedling, clear shrubs and weeds within a 1-meter diameter range around the tree base, and combine this with earthing up and fertilization. Do this once before and after the rainy season each year. If conditions permit, adding one more tending operation in between is even better.
Wild yellow rosewood trees are distributed in Hainan. In recent years, Guangdong, Fujian, Guangxi, Yunnan and other provinces and regions have introduced and cultivated it, and some places have already established plantation forests. However, because yellow rosewood grows slowly and takes a long time to mature, it is not suitable for large-scale planting. For example, many people in Hainan cultivate yellow rosewood artificially, and most plant two or three mu.
