Where to buy wildflower mix seeds? Detailed guide to sowing and raising seedlings
Wildflowers in the countryside are fresh and lovely, extremely pleasing to the eye. Nowadays many wildflowers have been successfully cultivated artificially, and wildflower mix seeds have also come out, meaning that seeds of multiple wildflowers are mixed together, and after sowing the blooms are very beautiful. So where are wildflower mix seeds sold? How do you sow and raise seedlings? Let's find out below.
Where are wildflower mix seeds sold?
There are many channels for buying wildflower seeds. You can buy them at local seed shops, flower and nursery stock markets, and you can also buy them online. The price of wildflower mix seeds is not high, around 35 to 55 yuan per jin, and there are also many merchants selling seeds on the market. When buying, it is recommended to buy from legitimate merchants, preferably from local professional seed sellers or seed companies, where the quality is more guaranteed, you can choose for yourself, and any follow-up problems can be properly resolved, making them very trustworthy. Buying online is of course also possible, but the risk is relatively high; buying from the official websites of some seed companies is still advisable.
Wildflower mixes are generally used to build flower seas and are planted over large areas. If the seed quality is not high, then the landscape effect will also be less than satisfactory. Therefore, when selecting seeds, we must choose carefully and buy mature, plump new seeds. Old seeds with damage and disease must not be used, as they will seriously affect the effect of the flower landscape.
How do you raise wildflower mix seeds?
1. Sowing time
Depending on the desired viewing period, wildflower mixes can be sown in spring, summer and autumn, with the temperature controlled above 8℃ and below 35℃. For autumn sowing, mid-September. The viewing period is from mid-April to June of the following year; after sowing, film covering is needed for insulation, and 5 to 6 months after sowing they enter the full bloom period; or sow in November, with the viewing period in May of the following year, entering the full bloom period in 5 to 6 months. For spring sowing, March 20 to April 10, entering the viewing period from June to August. For summer sowing, July to August, entering the viewing period from September to October. It should be noted that after both spring sowing and summer sowing, film covering is needed to retain moisture, and 2 months after sowing they can enter the full bloom period.
2. Sowing density
According to the site conditions, determine the sowing rate per square meter, generally 2 grams to 3 grams per square meter. Each wildflower mix has a maximum sowing rate and a minimum sowing rate. The minimum sowing rate is about 650 to 750 seeds per square meter (about 0.6 grams to 1.2 grams per square meter), and the maximum sowing rate is 1500 to 2000 seeds per square meter (about 1.5 grams to 3 grams per square meter). This sowing rate is needed when the soil preparation is not sufficient, there are many weeds, or the maximum highlighting of color effect is required. Generally, a sowing rate of 2 grams to 2.5 grams per square meter is better. Unless in special circumstances, sowing above the maximum sowing rate should be avoided, otherwise perennial herbaceous flowers may show poor growth.
3. Site clearing
Clear away surface garbage, weeds and fallen leaves and dead branches. If the site was previously planted with vegetation such as white clover, it needs to be pulled out with roots. In places overgrown with weeds, weeds need to be controlled before sowing. Water thoroughly before land preparation to promote weed germination, then plow and harrow to clear them, and the land is ready for sowing; or after weeds grow, spray herbicides such as glyphosate or huangcaojing, control the first flush of strong weeds for 15 to 20 days, and then sow. Irrigate before plowing to improve soil moisture within the 20 cm to 50 cm soil layer, which is beneficial for germination and growth after sowing. For overly barren soil, when plowing, add 20 kg of diammonium phosphate, 10 kg of phosphate fertilizer, and 5 kg of urea per mu for improvement.
4. Sowing method
It depends on the size of the planting area and the terrain. When the area is small, you can sow by hand or use a cyclone seeder. Mix dry, clean sand with the seeds at a ratio of sand:seeds = 1:1 or 2:1. According to the terrain, divide the area into plots, weigh out the corresponding seeds for each plot; each plot should preferably not exceed 1 mu, in order to sow the seeds more evenly. After sowing, rake lightly once with a wooden rake; the soil covering thickness must not exceed 2 times the diameter of the seed grains. If sowing over a large area, such as more than 5 mu, it is best to use drilling. The maximum row spacing for drilling is 6 cm, the soil cover should not exceed 0.5 cm, and after sowing use a compactor to press the soil so that the soil and seeds are in as close contact as possible. On steep slopes, mountainous land and other plots where ordinary sowing equipment cannot be used, a hydroseeder can be used for sowing.
5. Post-sowing management
Watering: after sowing, spray water with a nozzle to ensure the 10 cm soil layer is moist. After sowing, most varieties can emerge within 15 days, so within 15 days the soil must be kept moist to prevent wind from being strong and the soil drying out, which would affect germination. During this period, mainly use a nozzle to spray water. From 15 to 20 days after sowing, when the emergence rate is about 60% to 70%, remove the covering, and at this point irrigation can be carried out. When the soil is moist to a depth of 10 cm to 15 cm, seed growth can have a sufficient water supply. During high summer temperatures, irrigation should avoid being carried out at noon.
The flower landscape created by wildflower mixes has a long flowering period, with flowers visible throughout the year, and the flower colors are rich and varied, with high ornamental value. Moreover, these flowers generally have wild attributes, strong vitality, and are easy to cultivate and manage.
