Tall fescue is one of the most widely used cool-season turfgrasses in China. It is often used for sports field turf, protective turf, gardens, green spaces, parks, football fields and other sports lawns, and has a greening effect. So where are tall fescue seeds sold? What are the seedling growing methods? Let's take a look below.

Where are tall fescue seeds sold?

There are many channels for buying tall fescue seeds. You can go to specialty seed stores, local flower and bird markets, or buy online. Generally, consider these aspects: first, price. Seeds priced higher usually mean the seller has invested more cost, and the seed quality will naturally be better. Second, selecting seeds. Ask the seller about the seed storage techniques, the seed color, smell, etc., and judge the seed quality from various aspects. Third, online shopping. Try to choose online stores that have been in business for a long time and have a good reputation. As for individual transactions, forget it, because after buying seeds we can easily be unable to contact the seller.

What are the tall fescue seedling growing methods?

1. Sowing

The sowing time is suitable in mid-March or mid-to-late September. To avoid weed damage, autumn sowing works better. Before sowing, a herbicide can be applied. After sowing, cover with 1~2cm of fine soil and keep the soil moist. Generally, it can form a turf in about 50.

2. Reseeding

For plots where the lawn has become bare, while doing weed control and loosening the soil, you can spray with 800 times diluted carbendazim, and also carry out timely reseeding.

3. Pruning

Tall fescue lawns grow quickly in spring, so prune frequently, but follow the 1/3 principle. In summer, reduce the pruning frequency and increase the mowing height of the lawn. Autumn is the peak growth period, so pruning should be strengthened, pruning once every 3~4 weeks, with a stubble height of 5~6cm. As the weather turns colder, gradually reduce the number of prunings and increase the pruning height.

4. Fertilizing

Tall fescue lawns are tolerant of poor soil, so avoid too much fertilizer. In spring, 500kg of decomposed farmyard manure can be spread. From April to May, spread 2kg of urea per 667m. Do not fertilize in summer. In autumn, the lawn grows vigorously, and if conditions permit, fertilizer should be supplemented appropriately; lawn-specific fertilizer is better.

5. Watering

Watering should follow the principle of "water when dry, stop when wet." In spring, there is drought and much wind, high evaporation, severe soil moisture deficit, and serious salt-alkali return, so water should be given in time. When the soil surface alternately thaws during the day and freezes at night, that is, when the daily average temperature is above 0°C, water thoroughly for greening up. The watering amount should be based on keeping the soil moist to a depth of 15~20cm. In summer, water in the evening or morning, which helps the lawn absorb water and avoids being scorched by high temperatures.

6. Aerating

Autumn is a good time for lawn aerating. It is generally done in areas where the turf is obviously dense and matted, as well as in places where water accumulates after rain. Use a solid cone to insert into the turf; or use a special aerating machine. After aerating, press lightly. This helps drainage, and at the same time can enhance the drought resistance of new roots during drought in the coming year.

7. Topdressing with soil

During the lawn grass growing period, in order to make the turf surface level, help the formation of turf blocks, and make pruning easier, mix sand and soil according to the soil quality of the original soil and apply it evenly to the lawn.

Tall fescue has strong adaptability, emerges quickly, and has a high survival rate. It has advantages such as drought resistance, waterlogging tolerance, poor-soil tolerance, trampling tolerance, and long lifespan. It is planted in many areas. If you want to grow it, you can refer to the sowing and management methods above.
