Notopterygium is a very common traditional Chinese medicine, with effects of relieving the exterior and dispersing cold, dispelling wind and overcoming dampness, and also relieving pain. Some people specifically grow Notopterygium to make money, and some grow it for their own use. So how should Notopterygium seeds be selected? What are the seedling cultivation methods? Friends who want to know, just read on!

1. How should Notopterygium seeds be selected?

Notopterygium seeds must first undergo some screening, filtering out diseased and shriveled empty shells, leaving only plump, bright, healthy seeds for sowing, which can ensure the seedling emergence rate to the greatest extent.

2. Seedling cultivation methods for Notopterygium seeds

1. Seed collection

Notopterygium seeds are mainly collected from the wild, generally collecting seeds from Notopterygium plants that have grown for more than 3 years. At the end of August and early September each year, when Notopterygium seeds are fully mature, collect them together with the stems, lightly pat them to remove the stems, and after drying for 1-2 days, thresh them. The seeds must be carefully selected, cleaned of impurities and inferior seeds, then dried and stored in a cool place.

2. Seed treatment

Notopterygium seeds are relatively small, and their outer shells are hard and have fuzz. They generally need to be dormant at room temperature for 8-10 months, so seeds harvested in the same year must be treated by the sand storage method or the chemical method. When using the sand storage method, first spread 1 layer of clean, moist fine sand in a cardboard box, then scatter 1 layer of seeds, with a thickness ratio of fine sand to seeds of 5:1, treat in a cool place (0-10°C) for 40-60 days, then treat at 10-20°C for 20-35 days. When using the chemical treatment method, first soak with 1g/kg gibberellin solution for 10-12 hours, then rinse with clean water to wash away the soaking solution, and dry until the seeds no longer stick to each other.

3. Land selection, land preparation, sowing

Choose sandy loam soil with deep soil layers, loose and fertile, good drainage, and relatively high soil humus content. Use Yifuyuan biological bacterial fertilizer to thoroughly decompose barnyard manure at 1.5-1 ton per mu, diammonium phosphate 50 kg/mu or triple superphosphate 50 kg, urea 15 kg. Combine with deep plowing to mix the fertilizer evenly with the soil, form ridges at a specification of ridge width 130c and height 10c, open sowing furrows on the ridge surface at a row spacing of 20m, with a width of 4-5cm and a depth of 2-3cm, mix the seeds and fine sand at a ratio of 1:5 with slight rubbing, then evenly scatter into the furrows, cover with soil, rake level, and slightly compact. The sowing rate is 2-3kg per mu, and after sowing, cover with a shade net in time.

4. Irrigation

After sowing, on the ridge surface covered with a shade net, use micro-sprinkling or a watering can to water thoroughly with Yifuyuan germination-promoting rooting water 1 time, using 3-5 kg per mu. Water lightly and frequently, keeping the soil surface moist to facilitate full stands. The watering time is generally in the early morning and evening. In the early morning, the earlier the watering the better; in the evening, water after 19:00. Never water during the high temperatures at noon. When the seedlings are 16cm tall, water a second time; when the winter temperature is 5°C, water for overwintering; in the second year, during the green-up stage and before ridge closure, water with Yifuyuan germination-promoting rooting water 1 time each.

5. Checking seedlings and filling gaps

Seedlings emerge about 120 days after sowing. After emergence, check the seedlings and fill gaps in time. If missing seedlings or broken rows are found, transplant seedlings with soil to fill the gaps, and after replanting, immediately irrigate with germination-promoting rooting agent settling water. When the seedlings are 6-7cm tall, thin, finalize, and fill gaps at a plant spacing of 15-20cm, then irrigate 1-2 times.

6. Topdressing

When 10cm tall, combine with irrigation to apply decomposed human and animal manure as topdressing. From June to July, apply diammonium phosphate as topdressing. In the second year, apply diammonium phosphate as topdressing during the green-up stage and the ridge closure stage.

7. Cultivation and weeding

After Notopterygium emerges, cultivate once each in combination with thinning and finalizing seedlings, keeping it shallow near the seedlings and deep between the rows. When the seedlings are 15cm tall, carry out cultivation and weeding 1 more time.

Alright, that is all for what the editor wants to share with everyone today. If you are thinking of planting Notopterygium, when selecting seeds, remember to choose plump, bright, healthy seeds for sowing, so that the seedling emergence rate will be relatively high. Above, the editor also shared in detail some seedling cultivation methods for Notopterygium seeds, hoping to help everyone.
