Redbud is also called redbud, purple pearl, mantiaohong, etc. It blooms in spring, with butterfly-like corollas, and the pink clusters are very beautiful. In addition, it also blooms on the tree trunk, hence the name redbud. If you want to plant redbud, how should you select the seeds? What seedling-raising methods are there? Let's take a look together below.

How to select redbud seeds?

For redbud seeds, choose high-quality seeds that are plump, highly glossy, and free of insect holes. Also pay attention to the purchasing channel. You can buy them at local seed stores, flower and nursery stock markets, etc. Be sure to choose reputable sellers, as the quality is more guaranteed. The market price of redbud seeds is about fifty yuan per jin. The price is not very high, but some redbud seeds on the market are sold at low prices and are of very poor quality, with a low germination rate after sowing. Therefore, everyone must not choose seeds that are too cheap.

What seedling-raising methods are there for redbud?

1. Sowing

The sowing time is generally chosen in spring. Before sowing, the seeds should first undergo low-temperature stratification for more than 2 months. After sowing, they can germinate in 30 days. If the seeds are soaked in warm water for 1 day before sowing, the germination effect will be better.

2. Transplanting

The best time to transplant redbud is from November to December after leaf fall in winter each year, and from February to April of the following year before germination. When transplanting larger plants, a soil ball is needed to help them survive. If transplanting during the flowering period, some flowers need to be removed to avoid consuming too many nutrients and affecting survival. When planting, make sure the soil ball does not loosen. Apply 10-15 kg of decomposed compost or manure per hole, and water thoroughly immediately after planting to ensure survival.

3. Fertilizing

Apply decomposed organic fertilizer once each in early spring, summer, and after autumn every year to promote flowering and the formation of flower buds. After each fertilization, water thoroughly to facilitate root absorption.

4. Pruning

Redbud is tolerant of pruning. From after leaf fall in winter to before sprouting in spring, promptly prune diseased and pest-infested branches, crossing branches, overlapping branches, etc., to maintain a beautiful tree shape. Because redbud can also bloom on old branches, when pruning, be sure not to cut too many old branches, so as to avoid affecting the amount of blooming. Redbud also has strong sprouting ability, especially at the base, where tiller buds are particularly easy to sprout. These sprouts should be cut off in time to maintain a beautiful tree shape and avoid consuming too many nutrients. After flowering, if seeds are not needed, the seed pods can be removed, also to avoid consuming too many nutrients, which is unfavorable for growth.

5. Pest and disease control

The main insect pests of redbud include Homoeocerus stricornis, cotton aphid, Parasa lepida, Latoia concinna, and white-browed nettle caterpillar, etc. If they occur, during the nymph stage of Homoeocerus stricornis, spray 48% Lorsban emulsifiable concentrate at 3500 times dilution to kill them; if cotton aphid occurs, spray lime sulfur mixture in early spring; if Parasa lepida, Latoia concinna, or white-browed nettle caterpillar occurs, during their larval stage use Bt emulsion at 500 times dilution or 1.2% nicotine anabasine emulsifiable concentrate at 1000 times dilution to kill them.

The main diseases of redbud include redbud angular leaf spot, redbud dieback, and redbud sooty mold. For redbud angular leaf spot, spray 75% Dacronil wettable granules at 800 times dilution for control; for redbud dieback, choose 75% chlorothalonil wettable granules at 700 times dilution for control; for redbud sooty mold control, promptly kill aphids and scale insects, strengthen pruning, and insist on ventilation and light transmission. If only a small amount occurs, it can be wiped clean with a clean cloth.

The above is an introduction to redbud seeds and seedling-raising methods. Redbud has many uses: the flowers can be ornamental, the bark can be used as medicine, and the wood can be used for furniture, construction, etc. It has good planting prospects.
