Magnolia flowers are also known as white magnolia, winter jasmine, spring jasmine, biond magnolia flowers, etc. The flower colors are diverse and the forms are graceful, giving them high ornamental value. In addition, magnolia flowers contain aromatic oil, which can be used to make essence or extract, and since they also have medicinal value, they are cultivated in many areas. If you want to grow magnolia, where can you buy the seeds? What are the seedling cultivation methods? Let's find out below.

Where to Buy Magnolia Seeds?

Magnolia seeds are very common and can generally be bought at flower markets or from seed sellers in various places, and we can also buy them online. It is recommended to buy from local physical stores, which is more reliable because you can select the seeds yourself, but you should buy from regular merchants with a business license. If buying online, you should be even more careful to choose a regular and reliable seed seller, so that not only is the quality excellent, but the after-sales service is also very complete.

What Are the Magnolia Seedling Cultivation Methods?

1. Seed Collection and Sowing

Collect in late September when the fruit turns red and splits open; collecting too early means it will not germinate, and collecting too late means it is easy to fall off. After collecting, select plump seeds from healthy trees free of pests and diseases, spread them in a ventilated place, and as the aggregate fruit gradually splits open, take out the seeds and soak them briefly in water, rub off the red fleshy membrane attached to the seed coat, and scrub the oil on the seed coat with soda water, then rinse clean with clear water, spread in a ventilated place to dry, store in sand in a wooden box, and sow in the open field in mid-to-late February of the following year.

2. Seedbed Sowing

The seedbed should be chosen as new land free of pests and diseases, preferably yellow soil or sandy loam with deep soil layers, set up as a raised bed, sown in rows, and the base fertilizer can be fully decomposed human manure and urine or cake meal, which should be turned into the soil before the bed is leveled. Never use garbage as base fertilizer, to avoid carrying diseases and bacteria. The row spacing is 30cm, cover the seeds with burnt soil fertilizer or yellow soil mixed with chaff ash, with a thickness 3 times the diameter of the seeds, and cover the top with rice straw to keep warm and moist.

3. Seedling Management

Seedlings generally do not suffer from serious pests and diseases. During the seedling stage, apply fast-acting nitrogen fertilizer 3 to 4 times. One-year-old seedlings reach a height of 30 to 40cm. They can be transplanted in October of the same year. If cultivating large seedlings, transplant in the following spring, appropriately cut the main root, control the density, and in 3 to 5 years you can cultivate qualified seedlings with a plant height of 3m, a diameter of 6cm, a complete crown, and sparse flower buds.

4. Water Management

Magnolia is neither tolerant of waterlogging nor drought. In cultivation and care, the principle that it likes moisture and fears waterlogging should be strictly followed. In water management, you must ensure the soil is neither too dry nor too wet. During cultivation, the soil should be kept moist without standing water.

5. Pruning and Branch Training

To keep the magnolia crown graceful, ventilated and light-transmitting, promote flower bud differentiation, and ensure large flowers the following year, attention should be paid to pruning. Because magnolia's branches have poor callus-forming ability, generally no pruning is done unless necessary. If the tree shape is unattractive or messy, diseased and pest-infested branches, dry and dead branches, drooping branches, water sprout branches, overly dense branches, and useless branches should be thinned out to facilitate ventilation and light transmission and a graceful tree shape.

6. Pest and Disease Control

Magnolia is a tree species with relatively strong disease resistance. Common diseases include anthracnose, chlorosis, and leaf scorch. If anthracnose occurs, spray with 75% chlorothalonil wettable powder 800 times solution or 70% anthracnose fumate 500 times solution, once every 10 days, for 3 to 4 consecutive sprays to effectively control the disease. For chlorosis, use 0.2% ferrous sulfate solution to drench the roots, or use 0.1% ferrous sulfate solution for leaf spraying, and more farmyard manure should be applied.

The main pests include bagworms, hawk moths, red spiders, longhorn beetles, etc., and occasionally underground pests such as white grubs. If pests occur, use 80% dichlorvos emulsifiable concentrate 800 times solution or 50% fenitrothion emulsifiable concentrate 800 times solution to kill bagworms; use Bt emulsion 800 times solution or 50% fenitrothion emulsifiable concentrate 800 times solution to kill hawk moths; use 40% dicofol 800 times solution or 5% hexythiazox 2000 times solution to kill red spiders; use Green Weilei 500 times solution to kill longhorn beetles; use 50% phoxim emulsion 1000 times solution to drench the roots and kill white grubs.

Magnolia is a relatively tall deciduous tree, planted in most areas of our country, not only because its flowers are very beautiful, but also because it has a certain resistance to harmful gases, especially a certain adsorption capacity for sulfur, and it is also heat-tolerant, cold-tolerant, barren-tolerant, and has few pests and diseases, so it is very suitable for planting in courtyards.
