Tape grass is also called "shoulder pole grass" because its leaves are flat and long, like a carrying pole, which is how it got the name. Tape grass is one of the aquatic plants that crayfish quite like to eat, and it is also a change-of-pace feed for crayfish when the seasons change. Nowadays, crayfish farming ponds basically all plant tape grass. So how should tape grass seeds be selected? What propagation methods are there? Let's take a look together below.

1. How should tape grass seeds be selected?

For seed-grown tape grass, the seeds chosen should be plump, with good gloss, black or dark brown in color, more than 2 mm in length, with a maximum diameter of no less than 0.3 mm. Seeds of natural wild tape grass are best, as they can improve the tillering ability of the first filial generation.

Choose clear weather to sun-dry the seeds for 1-2 days, and soak the seeds in clear pond water for 12 hours before sowing.

2. What propagation methods are there for tape grass?

1. Sowing and propagation

Use tape grass seeds for sowing, letting them sprout and grow. When sowing and planting, the time span for choosing can be relatively wide; sowing can be done from winter to spring. The difference, however, is that when sowing in winter, you can take advantage of drying the pond to scatter the plants on the shallow flats of the pond, then use a harrow to mix the soil and seeds together. When sowing in spring, the pond generally already has water, so at this time you can wrap the seeds in mud and throw them into the pond.

After sowing, once the temperature rises above 15 degrees, the seeds will slowly sprout and grow.

2. Cuttings

Cuttings are usually planted in March-April, when the temperature is in the teens, which suits the growth of tape grass. You can choose already-grown tape grass stems for cutting propagation. Choose stems about 10 cm-15 cm long, then directly insert them into the shallow flats of the pond, with row and plant spacing generally between 30-40 cm, and they will take root within a few days.

3. Transplanting

When the seedlings have two pairs of true leaves and are 7-10 cm tall, transplanting is best. Set plants at a row spacing of 25 cm-30 cm or 26 cm-33 cm. You can also use the rice "seedling throwing method" to throw tape grass seedlings into the shrimp farming water area.

The above is an introduction to tape grass. If the aquatic plants are too dense, top them promptly to stir the water body, control growth, and reduce oxygen deficiency. When patrolling the pond every day, remove the grass floating on the water surface to avoid spoiling the water quality and affecting the photosynthesis of the aquatic plants at the bottom of the pond.
