A Detailed Guide to Selecting Cattail Seeds and Raising Seedlings
Cattail is an aquatic herbaceous plant that mainly grows in lakes, ponds, ditches, swamps and slow-flowing stretches of rivers, and it is distributed across many provinces in China. Cattail has relatively high economic value; pollen has certain medicinal properties, and its leaves can be used for weaving, papermaking and so on; therefore many people plant cattail specifically. So how do you select cattail seeds? What are the seedling-raising methods? Friends who want to know should read on below!
1. How do you select cattail seeds?
When selecting cattail seeds, you must choose high-quality ones, as this is what promotes more luxuriant growth, a high yield, and therefore greater returns. When buying cattail seeds, of course we should pay attention to price, and remember not to go for cheap options: the low-priced seeds sold on the market are often of poor quality, which can seriously affect plant growth, so do not neglect seed quality just to save a little money and end up with poor plant growth, as that would be penny wise and pound foolish.
2. Seedling-raising methods for cattail seeds
1. Land preparation and fertilisation
It is best to choose a swamp or riverside or lakeside flatland with a relatively deep silt layer and rich in organic matter for planting. If the underwater soil of the planting plot is relatively soft and fertile, then no ploughing is needed; simply clear the weeds and level it slightly. However, if the underwater soil is relatively hard and also low in fertility, then ploughing is required, applying 5000 kg of human and animal manure per mu as a base fertiliser.
2. Propagation methods
Cattail grows vigorously and has relatively strong vitality, so its propagation methods are relatively simple; in production, two propagation methods are used: division and sowing. Division propagation is carried out from April to June: dig out the underground rhizomes of vigorous-growing cattail, cut them into several small sections with young shoots, and plant them. Sowing propagation is carried out in spring: scatter the seeds on the soil, keep the soil moist, and transplant them only when they have grown into small seedlings in summer.
3. Transplanting
The transplanting time can be chosen in the period between spring and summer, when the temperature is mostly 15-25 degrees, as the survival rate of transplanting is high at this time. When transplanting, choose vigorous-growing divisions as seedlings; the seedlings should be dug out with their roots and planted immediately, with a plant-to-row spacing of 50x50 cm. If the seedling leaves are too long, the tips can be cut off to prevent the plants from being too tall and lodging.
4. Field management
Cattail requires a moderate water depth: in the early stage, a water depth of 15-20 cm is sufficient; in the later stage, as the plants grow, the water level must be continuously deepened, but it should not exceed 1.2 m at the deepest, as water depth control determines the yield and quality of cattail. One month after transplanting, a topdressing is generally applied, with 1000 or 1500 kg of manure or barnyard manure per mu, and 1-2 topdressings later depending on plant growth. In summer, when the cattail stems grow out of the water surface, they should be pulled out promptly; the tender stems or leaves can also be peeled off and sold on the market, with density reasonably controlled so that they are evenly distributed.
After reading the above, everyone can also see that the economic value of cattail is not low; it can be said to be a treasure from top to bottom, so its planting prospects are still fairly promising. If you want to make money from planting it, you must pay attention to choosing higher-quality seeds when selecting seeds, and you can also refer to some of the seedling-raising methods above. We hope this article can help everyone.
