How do you grow Aralia elata seedlings?
1. Harvesting seeds
Aralia elata seeds generally mature from September to October. After the fruit is harvested, it should be piled up to promote softening of the fruit. After rubbing and washing, use water to float away the peel and pulp. After the mature seeds sink, scoop out the seeds and dry them for later use. Seed treatment generally uses the overwinter burial stratification method to promote germination. In November, seeds can be soaked in 0.5% copper sulfate solution for 1-2 h, then scooped out and washed clean. Mix the seeds and fine sand evenly at a ratio of 1:3 and put them into a woven bag or box. The humidity should be such that it forms a ball when squeezed in the hand and breaks apart when released.
2. Seed treatment
Choose a dry, wind-sheltered, sunny spot and dig a 30-50 cm pit, then place the seeds in the pit and level them, cover with 5-10 cm of rice straw, then cover with 10 cm of river sand, and then pile the covering soil into a mound shape. After the ground thaws the following spring, take the seeds out. According to local weather conditions, germination can be promoted 2-3 weeks in advance. It is advisable to choose an indoor and sunlight greenhouse, spread the seeds flat and pile them on plastic sheeting, and keep the temperature at 15-25°C. When the surface layer of sand is found to be dry, turn them over from top to bottom at any time to keep the temperature and humidity uniform from top to bottom. Once about 30% of the seeds have cracked open, they can be sown.
3. Land preparation and sowing
Because Aralia elata is a wild tree, the seedling site should be chosen as wind-sheltered and sunny loam and sandy loam with good drainage and irrigation conditions and fertile, loose soil. Combined with deep plowing, apply more than 2,000 kg of fully decomposed high-quality farmyard manure per mu, plow deeply and harrow finely to achieve uniform fertility. Then make beds 15-50 cm high, 1.2 m wide, and 10 m long. Before sowing, the bed surface can be disinfected with 1% ferrous sulfate solution, then sow in drills. Open shallow furrows 15 cm apart, evenly scatter the seeds mixed with fine sand into the furrows, then cover with 0.5 cm of fine sand or fine soil. Cover the bed surface with a thin layer of sawdust and pine needles to maintain the temperature and humidity of the bed surface, prevent the bed surface soil from crusting, and promote seedling growth.
4. Seedling stage management
Before the seedlings emerge, water multiple times to keep the bed surface moist. After the seedlings emerge, it is better to water heavily and less often. After the seedlings grow true leaves, set up a shade shed with about 30% light transmittance. As the seedlings grow, gradually increase the light transmittance until the seedlings grow 2-3 leaves, then remove the shade shed and net.
5. Cultivation and weeding
Cultivate and weed in time, thin the seedlings 2-3 times, keep the large ones and remove the inferior ones, and maintain 50-60 seedlings per square meter. Keep the temperature above 12°C and the humidity at 60%. By mid-July, foliar topdressing can be carried out.
6. Field planting management
One-year-old seedlings can be planted when they reach 30-50 cm in height. Choose sections and plots with deep soil layers and fertile soil. For planting density, the spacing between plants and rows on hillside land is 1×1 m, and on farmland is 0.5×0.5 m. When earthing up, tread it firm to ensure survival.
Aralia elata is a treasure among wild vegetables. It contains a saponin and is a very good pollution-free anti-cancer food. It sells very well on domestic and international markets and has broad development prospects. If conditions permit, you can try planting it.
