What are the methods for selecting and growing seeds of softstem bulrush?
Softstem bulrush has thick, creeping rhizomes with many fibrous roots. It is mainly produced in many provinces of China, growing by lakesides, watersides, shallow ponds, marshy ground or in wet grassland. It is cultivated in Beijing for ornamental use, and in the Yunnan area its stems are often taken as material for weaving mats. It has a high removal rate for organic matter, ammonia nitrogen, phosphate and heavy metals in sewage. So how do you select softstem bulrush seeds? What are the seedling growing methods? Let's take a look together with the editor below.
1. How do you select softstem bulrush seeds?
Softstem bulrush seeds come in large and small sizes, but when planting softstem bulrush, you must choose healthy, plump seeds and discard moldy or incomplete seeds, to avoid affecting the germination rate.
You can soak the seeds in warm water (at a temperature similar to face-washing water) for 12-24 hours, until the seeds absorb water and swell. For very common seeds that germinate easily, this step can be skipped.
2. What are the seedling growing methods for softstem bulrush?
1. Sowing and seedling growing
Usually sown indoors in March-April. Level and press down the potting soil in the pot, scatter the seeds on it, sift a layer of fine soil over them to cover the seeds, then sink the pot shallowly in water so the potting soil stays constantly soaked through. Keep the room temperature at 20-25°C, and in about 20 days they will sprout and take root.
2. Seed treatment
For tiny seeds that are hard to pick up by hand or with other tools, you can moisten one end of a toothpick with water and stick the seeds one by one onto the surface of the growing medium, then cover with 1 cm of medium, and then place the sown pot into water, with the water depth at 1/2-2/3 of the pot's height, letting the water slowly seep up. For larger seeds that can be picked up by hand or with other tools, place the seeds directly into the medium and sow them at a spacing of 3×3 cm.
After sowing, cover with medium to a thickness 2-3 times that of the seeds. After sowing, you can use a sprayer or a fine-holed watering can to wet the sowing medium; afterwards, water again when the potting soil is slightly dry, still taking care not to water too forcefully, so as not to wash the seeds out;
3. Seedling stage management
After sowing in autumn, when cold waves and low temperatures occur, you can wrap the pot in plastic film to help keep it warm and moist; after the seedlings emerge, uncover the film promptly, and let the seedlings receive sunlight before 9:30 every morning, or after 3:30 in the afternoon, otherwise the seedlings will grow very weak and spindly; after most of the seeds have sprouted, appropriate thinning is needed: pull out the diseased and unhealthy seedlings so that the remaining seedlings have some space between them; when most of the seedlings have grown 3 or more leaves, they can be transplanted into pots.
The above is an introduction to softstem bulrush. Like other herbaceous flowers, softstem bulrush has a relatively high demand for fertilizer and water, and you should follow the principles of "apply dilute fertilizer frequently, use small amounts but more often, with complete nutrition" and "alternate dry and wet, dry means thoroughly dry, do not water when not dry, water thoroughly when watering" for fertilizing (and watering).
