Euonymus, also known as guijianyu (winged euonymus), is a shrub in the family Celastraceae, genus Euonymus. In landscaping it is commonly used as hedges and ground cover. The base branches creep along the ground and take root, the root system is well developed, and it tolerates mild to moderate salinity and alkalinity. The leaves turn light purplish-red in winter and gradually fall when new leaves grow the following year. Euonymus is not only attractive, it can also purify the air and add a touch of nature to the indoors. So how do you select Euonymus seeds? What are the seedling-raising methods? Let's take a look together below.

1. How do you select Euonymus seeds?

Euonymus seeds are generally brown and oval, wrapped on the outside by an orange-red aril, and 4-6 mm long. When planting Euonymus you must select plump, healthy seeds and discard incomplete seeds and those stored too long; the seeds must be treated before planting.

2. What are the seedling-raising methods for Euonymus?

1. Sowing and seedling raising

After collecting seeds in autumn, sun-dry them to thresh, rub off the aril with plant ash, wash and dry them in the shade, then store them in layered sand stratification. The following spring, sow in drills with a row spacing of 20 cm, cover with about 1 cm of soil, then cover with straw to retain moisture. After the seedlings emerge, shade them appropriately. In the first year the seedlings reach about 30 cm tall; after being transplanted the following year and grown on for another 3-4 years, they can be lifted and planted out.

2. Cutting propagation

Generally in June and July, select semi-mature branches and take heel cuttings. Transplanting should be done after leaf fall and before bud break. Small seedlings can be transplanted bare-root, which makes them easier to establish. Large seedlings establish more easily if moved with their original soil. If intermittent misting equipment is used for cutting propagation, it can be done in all three seasons of spring, summer and autumn.

3. Grafting propagation

Grafting is generally done in spring when the sap begins to flow and before bud break. The bark-insertion method is mostly used; this method not only gives a high survival rate but also produces mature plants quickly and is easy to shape. After selecting the scion, cut one side of the lower part into a long slope of 2.5 to 3 cm, and cut the other side into a short slope of 1 cm. Then use a knife to open the bark of the rootstock and insert the scion into the bark. If the bark is too tight, you can first make a vertical cut with the grafting knife before inserting the scion, then insert the scion into the center. At this point be sure not to insert the back cut of the scion completely; leave 0.5 cm of the wound exposed outside, which not only helps the scion survive but also prevents a lump from forming at the cut. Depending on the thickness of the rootstock, graft three or four scions. After grafting, wrap the joint and the cut surface of the rootstock tightly with plastic film.

4. Harvesting

Euonymus can be harvested throughout the year; after cutting the branches, take the tender twigs and sun-dry them. Or collect its winged structures and sun-dry them.

The above is an introduction to Euonymus. In China, it is distributed in all provinces and regions except Northeast China, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Tibet, Guangdong and Hainan. Euonymus has unusual winged branches; the young leaves of early spring and the autumn leaves are both purplish-red and very showy, and it blooms with yellow-green flowers in May-June, making it quite beautiful; it is an excellent tree species with ornamental value all year round.
