How do you grow Japanese cedar seedlings?
1. Sowing
Collect the cones in October, dry them in the shade for several days, wait for the seeds to fall off, wash them, and store them in moist sand. The seeds must never be allowed to dry out. In the spring of the following year, drill-sow them in a seedbed. Before sowing, disinfect and soak the seeds to promote germination. They germinate about 20 days after sowing, with a germination rate of 30%-40%. Pay attention to shading the seedlings. In the current year, the seedlings can reach 30-40 cm in height.
2. Site selection and land preparation
For afforestation land, choose gentle slopes in mountainous areas with a cool, foggy climate, as well as the middle and lower parts of slopes, gullies, low-lying land, and places with good drainage, where the soil layer is relatively deep and moist, the texture is good, and the soil is loose and fertile. Mountain tops, ridges, and places with barren soil are not suitable for planting. In gentle slope areas, strip site preparation is suitable, with a strip width of 0.6-0.8 m and a depth of 30 cm; the distance between strips depends on the plant and row spacing. In steep slope areas, large block site preparation is suitable, with a specification of more than 50×50×40 cm.
3. Planting techniques
Japanese cedar can be used to create mixed forests with Chinese fir. The mixed planting method often uses single-row mixed planting or single-and-double-row mixed planting. Generally, for pure forests cultivated for medium-diameter timber, the initial planting density is 167-222 plants per mu; for cultivating large-diameter timber, 111-167 plants per mu; for cultivating small-diameter timber, 222-333 plants per mu. This density can also be used when creating mixed forests.
Afforestation can be carried out in both winter and spring. In areas with severe spring drought, afforestation in the rainy season is suitable. When planting, properly prune overly long roots of the seedlings to avoid root curling during planting. The depth at which the seedlings are planted should be about 2-3 cm beyond the root collar. After backfilling fine soil around the roots, lift the seedlings slightly upward so the roots spread out, then fill in soil again and firm it down tightly, and finally cover with a layer of loose soil in an arc shape.
4. Later management
In the year of afforestation, weed and loosen the soil once in autumn; in the 2nd-3rd years, carry out one spring digging and one autumn shoveling each year; in the 4th-5th years, weed and loosen the soil once more each year. For young forests with full-site preparation, during the 3rd-4th years, intercropping with crops should be carried out as much as possible, using cultivation instead of tending. Around the 10th year, the first thinning should be carried out. The thinning intensity depends on the stand preservation density and site conditions, using different intensities where the number of thinned trees accounts for 20%-40% of the total number of trees in the stand. After that, depending on the stand growth condition and cultivation objectives, carry out 1-2 more thinnings, with an interval of 5-6 years. The number of final felling trees is 60-120.
5. Pest and disease control
Damping-off and red blight are common hazards, and they can be sprayed with a 1000-fold dilution of 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder. Pests include bagworms, leaf beetles, and red longhorn beetles, which can be killed with a 1000-fold dilution of 50% fenitrothion emulsifiable concentrate.
The Japanese cedar tree has a tall crown and a straight trunk, and can be used for construction, bridges, shipbuilding, papermaking, furniture, steaming basket utensils, and so on. It is also an important timber tree species. In addition, its tree form is elegant and majestic, making it a good tree species for greening and environmental protection.
