What are the common types of feed additives and which varieties are prohibited?
Feed additives are raw materials that must be used in the modern feed industry. Their role is to improve animal production performance, ensure animal health, save feed costs, and improve the quality of livestock products. At present, there are many types of feed additives used in the breeding industry. There are hundreds of single feed additive raw materials alone, but under the current trend of banning antibiotics in feed, some prohibited feed additives can no longer be used, otherwise penalties will be imposed. So what are the common types of feed additives? Which varieties have been prohibited? Let us learn about them together.
Common types of feed additives
1. Additives for supplementing and balancing nutrition: including amino acids, vitamins, trace mineral elements, etc.
2. Medicated feed additives: refers to premixes of veterinary drugs mixed with carriers or diluents for the prevention and treatment of animal diseases, including anticoccidial drugs, anthelmintics, antibacterial growth-promoting agents, etc.
3. Physiological metabolism-regulating additives: including hormones, anti-stress agents, Chinese herbal medicines, etc.
4. Additives that increase appetite and aid digestion: including acidifiers, sweeteners, umami agents, flavors, probiotics (direct-fed microbials), enzyme preparations, buffers, etc.
5. Feed addition and preservation additives: including mold inhibitors, antioxidants, binders, anti-caking agents, emulsifiers, silage preservatives, etc.
6. Other additives: including colorants, feed pigments, activated carbon, zeolite, maifan stone, bentonite, nitric acid rare earths, etc.
Which varieties have been prohibited?
According to the requirements of Announcement No. 194 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, starting from January 1, 2020, all growth-promoting medicated feed additive varieties except traditional Chinese medicines will be withdrawn. According to the announcement requirements, the prohibited ones are 11 types of antibiotics/synthetic antibacterial drugs that have the effect of preventing animal diseases and promoting animal growth, namely: bacitracin zinc premix; flavomycin premix; virginiamycin premix; nosiheptide premix; avilamycin premix; kitasamycin premix; oxytetracycline calcium premix; chlortetracycline premix; enramycin premix; methylene salicylic acid bacitracin premix; and quinocetone premix.
Of course, many drug categories were also prohibited earlier. In short, everyone should correspond one by one according to the "Catalog of Feed Additive Varieties Allowed for Use" issued by the state. It is best not to use feed additives that are not included in this "Catalog."
Overall, the rational use of feed additives has a positive impact on the poultry industry. Here we call on the majority of farmers to carry out scientific breeding during the breeding process and to use green, safe, and pollution-free feed additives.
