Anyone who has grown a bromeliad must surely love that splash of vivid red! But some people have also reported that it can become dull. However, today we are not here to explore why it does not turn red, but to start from the root and explain how to make it red.

1. Temperature

Temperature is one of the important factors affecting its flower color. The temperature it likes is 15°C to 22°C, so we need to place it in an environment with this temperature for it to show its red. In addition, winter is generally a time of low temperatures, and at this time we need to keep the temperature no lower than 10°C; otherwise, if it suffers cold damage, not only will its leaves turn yellow, but its red flowers will also be affected.

2. Light

Light is also an important factor in whether it can maintain its red color. Only by ensuring the role of light can it grow red. In winter, what it needs is bright sunlight, so in winter we should give it at least four to five hours of sunlight every day. And if it is rainy weather, the light needs to be increased. In summer, it is best to place it under shady trees, and set up a shade net according to the needs of indoor cultivation.

3. Soil

What it needs is loose soil; only by growing in such an environment can it turn thoroughly red. When growing it at home, the soil can be made by mixing soil and fine sand together, and it is necessary to ensure that it is rich in nutrients.

4. Fertilizer

Because its flowering time is in winter, we need to apply enough flower fertilizer to ensure its red color. Usually, every other week, it should be fertilized once. There are many choices for fertilizer, such as soybean cake, sesame residue and other materials. You can also use the water from soaking beans or rice washing water, but it must be fermented before use.

5. Watering

Because it loves a humid environment, if you want it to grow red, you must ensure this point. Watering should be done before noon, preferably in the morning, but it must be watered in the cup, rather than taking the measure of watering only in the pot. In order to keep the leaves dry at night, it is necessary to wet the leaves, or sprinkle water on the ground.

The quality of the water also needs attention. You cannot directly use tap water for watering. If you only have tap water, then it needs to be left to stand for a few days before use. Moreover, we had better spray water on the leaf surface to remove dust. Only when the leaf color is bright can its own photosynthesis be better ensured, and only then can it grow red.
