How to care for Phalaenopsis orchids before they bloom? These methods you need to master
I. Repotting and soil selection
When you buy a Phalaenopsis orchid, the shop owner will tell you that it needs to be repotted every year. If you don't repot it, the roots may rot. So how should you choose a pot and how should you choose soil?
1. Choosing a pot
Phalaenopsis orchids are very delicate flowers, so the pot must be a good one. You can choose a ceramic pot or a plastic one, but it must be multi-holed, and it must be a shallow pot, with a height no greater than the diameter of the bottom.
2. Choosing soil
Phalaenopsis orchids are plants with relatively mature cultivation techniques on the flower market. As for soil, there is special cultivation soil sold for them. If you want to save trouble, you can buy it directly; if you want it to be more perfect, you can also mix the soil yourself: first collect pine needles, peanut husks, bark shreds, charcoal, and other grass-ash-type fertilizers with high organic matter content. They can be mixed separately or combined. These should roughly meet the needs of Phalaenopsis orchids before blooming.
II. Temperature control
The temperature before Phalaenopsis orchids bloom must be well controlled. It is originally a tropical plant, so you can imagine that it needs a relatively high temperature. During the day, it is best at 25°C-28°C, and at night the temperature should not be lower than 18°C, preferably kept at around 20°C. It is very sensitive to temperature. If it is below 15°C for a long time, the roots will no longer absorb water. Without water, it is hard even to sustain life, let alone bloom. Especially in northern regions, where the climate is changeable and indoor temperatures are unstable, be sure to keep it warm at night.
III. Watering
In tropical coastal areas, the climate is very humid and rainfall is abundant. As a local plant, Phalaenopsis orchids also very much like a humid environment, so they must not be allowed to lack water. Especially before blooming, they should be sprinkled frequently, but pay attention to the amount of water sprinkled, and absolutely do not let water accumulate at the roots.
IV. Fertilizing
Phalaenopsis orchids grow very quickly before blooming and need a lot of nutrients, so they should be fertilized more, preferably once a week. When choosing fertilizer, it is best to choose one with more nutrients. As mentioned earlier, the cultivation techniques for Phalaenopsis orchids are already very mature. If you do not know how to mix fertilizer, you can also buy fertilizer specially used for this period.
