Key Points and Precautions for Piglet Weaning Technology

From the sow's farrowing until the piglets become nursery pigs, they must go through the weaning process, which greatly affects the piglets' development. Everyone also knows the saying that a one-jin difference in body weight during the piglet stage can mean a ten-jin difference at the time of finishing. Therefore, doing a good job of weaning piglets is clearly very necessary. The piglet weaning techniques and precautions are as follows:

1. Do not change the handler

Right after weaning, piglets are especially timid and will run around in fright when they see strangers. It is best to let familiar people feed them.

2. Do not castrate

Castrating piglets right after weaning is like “adding frost to snow”; the piglets' appetite decreases and wounds heal slowly. Wait until the piglets have fully adapted to the environment before castrating. Also do not rush to deworm right after weaning; deworming one week after weaning is better.

3. Do not huddle together

In cold weather, weaned piglets lose the warmth of the sow and huddle together for warmth, sometimes stacking very high, which can easily cause injury or death. At this time, effectively do a good job of keeping them warm, keep the floor dry, spread more soft bedding straw, and add one feeding of warm food at night. At night, also drive the pigs to move around two or three times to prevent them from urinating in the bedding area.

4. Do not overfeed

In the first few days after weaning, piglets have a poor appetite. At this time, feed less but more often, which can avoid feed waste and avoid indigestion-related diarrhea.

5. Do not be careless

In the first week after weaning, pay special attention to observing changes in the piglets' behavior, checking whether their eating, drinking, defecation, breathing, and sleeping are normal. If abnormalities are found, treat them promptly.

Doing these eight points well can help piglets get through the weaning transition period very well and ensure their growth and development rate. Pig farmers should also be careful to do these eight points well when weaning piglets.

6. Do not change the pen

At weaning, drive the sow out and keep the piglets in the original pen for rearing.

7. Do not mix groups

Let piglets from the same litter live together and try not to mix them with other piglets, so as to avoid biting and fighting.

8. Do not change the feed

In the first week after weaning, the feed should be the same as during the suckling period. After one week, gradually switch to weaned piglet feed, so that the piglets have a longer adaptation process. During this period, do not make major adjustments to feed type or nutritional level, and add the Baoyujin formula to the feed to improve disease resistance.
