The continuous rainfall in June brought considerable casualties and property losses to our country, so will there be pig disease outbreaks after the heavy rains in southern China in June? Will pork prices in the second half of the year be affected? Let's take a look together below.

The harm of heavy rain

Heavy rain and the floods it causes are one of the main natural disasters in our country. In recent decades they have occurred more frequently, and almost every year there are flood disasters with large affected areas, wide geographical distribution and severe economic losses. However, the prevention and treatment of parasitic diseases after disasters also need attention. After summer heavy rains comes the epidemic period and peak period for various animal diseases, and measures should be taken immediately to disinfect and eliminate sources of infection and to carry out harmless disposal of drowned animals.

Because manure pits overflow after rain, pollutants flow with the water, and sheds, pens and feeding utensils that have been submerged are severely contaminated. At the same time, pathogenic bacteria in the soil are washed out by floodwater, causing large-scale environmental contamination that can trigger animal diseases. For this reason, a thorough major cleaning and major disinfection should be carried out on sheds, pens, feeding utensils and the surrounding environment. Disinfect with disinfectants such as 10%-20% limewater, plant ash water, 2%-3% caustic soda solution, and 2%-5% peracetic acid solution, while also doing a good job of rodent control. Do not eat the carcasses of drowned livestock and poultry, and even more do not discard them at will; they should be deeply buried or incinerated under the guidance of the local animal health supervision department. In addition, after floods, animal health and epidemic prevention departments should carry out immunization in an organized and planned way to increase the herd immunity coverage of animals.

Will heavy rain cause pig disease outbreaks

In recent years, viral diseases in large-scale pig farms have tended to ease while bacterial diseases have shown an upward trend. There are many multi-pathogen pig diseases, often dominated by viral reproductive disorders such as swine fever, pseudorabies, parvovirus disease and Japanese encephalitis, with secondary or mixed infections of diseases such as Haemophilus parasuis disease, streptococcosis, pasteurellosis and colibacillosis; and whether bacterial or viral, the clinical symptoms shown by sick pigs are very similar, mainly manifesting as symptoms of respiratory disease, which brings great difficulty to diagnosis, treatment and prevention and control. It is understood that porcine respiratory disease complex is caused by the interaction of viruses, bacteria, environmental stress, mycotoxins and low pig immunity. But after heavy rain it is easy for various pathogens to breed.

Experts remind farmers to strengthen feeding management and improve the disease resistance of livestock and poultry. Pay attention to ventilation in sheds, control the temperature and humidity inside the sheds, promptly clean the feed troughs and drinking water devices, and remove manure and bedding from the sheds. Pigs, cattle and sheep should be kept in pens to prevent livestock from becoming infected by eating forage or water contaminated with pathogens. The focus of livestock and poultry rearing should be on the cleanliness of drinking water and feed, feeding more high-quality forage and feed, not feeding moldy forage and feed, and on the basis of ensuring a clean and hygienic food supply, adding additives such as vitamins to the feed or drinking water to improve the immunity of livestock and poultry, so as to enhance their disease resistance.

Will pork prices in the second half of the year be affected

According to a report on July 4, pig prices on the 4th: the national average ex-farm price of lean-type pigs was 6.98 yuan/jin, unchanged from the 3rd, and down 2.43 yuan from 9.41 yuan/jin in the same period last year. Average prices by province: Heilongjiang 6.8, Jilin 7.0, Liaoning 6.9, Hebei 7.0, Tianjin 6.9, Beijing 6.9, Shanxi 6.9, Shandong 7.2, Anhui 7.0, Jiangsu 7.0, Fujian 7.4, Guangdong 7.0, Henan 7.0, Jiangxi 7.0, Hubei 6.9, Hunan 6.8, Shaanxi 6.6, Sichuan 6.9, Yunnan 7.0. The national average ex-farm price of lean-type pigs was stable, and pig price fluctuations in all provinces were relatively steady. Pig prices in the north adjusted slightly, with trends weak in many places, among which Heilongjiang, Tianjin, Beijing and Shaanxi fell by about 0.1 yuan/kg, Liaoning and Shandong rose by 0.1-0.2 yuan/kg, and most other areas remained stable; pig prices in the south were mainly stable, with prices in the southwest, Anhui, Fujian and Hubei remaining stable, Jiangsu and Jiangxi rising slightly by 0.1 yuan/kg, and Hunan falling by 0.4 yuan/kg. Today the national average ex-farm price of lean-type pigs was highest in Fujian, at an average price of 14.8 yuan/kg, and lowest in Shaanxi, at an average price of 13.74 yuan/kg.

Domestic pig prices continued to show a trend of slight fluctuation and adjustment, with fierce supply-demand game in the market. On the one hand, current consumption is in the summer off-season for demand, and added to this the large pigs held back earlier have not been fully digested, so slaughterhouses do not have much difficulty in collecting pigs, which keeps slaughterhouses' willingness to push prices down undiminished; on the other hand, farmers have strong expectations for pig prices to rise in July and have the sentiment of holding back for a higher price and being reluctant to sell. At the same time, the recent widespread heavy rain in southern China has affected road transportation, blocked the transport and transfer of live pigs, and reduced the supply of pigs in local markets, boosting pig prices in some areas. In the short term, the situation of fierce supply-demand game in the market will continue, and it is recommended that farmers sell at the appropriate weight and not hold back excessively. At the same time, everyone needs to be reminded that high temperatures after heavy rain can easily cause pig disease outbreaks, so precautions should be taken.
