How to treat diarrhea in goats, and what medicine is best for a quick recovery from diarrhea?
Diarrhea in sheep is a common condition, and its main causes can be divided into two categories: pathogenic microbial infection and digestive system dysfunction. Diarrhea in sheep is quite harmful to them. The main symptoms of diarrhea in sheep, along with treatment drugs and prevention and control methods, are summarized as follows:
1. Indigestion or a sudden attack of wind-cold
Symptoms: The body temperature of the sick sheep is generally not high, and the loose stool often contains undigested forage residue. The feces are sour-smelling, and the sick sheep still maintains a certain appetite.
Prevention and treatment: Orally administer 30-40 grams of Pingwei San, mix evenly with warm water and drench, once a day, for 3-4 consecutive days, or orally administer Qingpi San.
2. Gastrointestinal parasites
Symptoms: The sheep's body temperature generally does not rise, the diarrhea is not very severe, it comes and goes, eating and drinking are basically normal, and worm bodies can often be found in the sick sheep's feces.
Prevention and treatment: Stop feeding for 1-2 days, or reduce the amount fed, give a small amount of high-quality hay and free access to water; the drinking water should be hygienic and clean and meet drinking standards, and 5-10 grams of table salt can be added to the drinking water.
3. Eating moldy and rotten feed
Symptoms: The body temperature does not rise or rises only slightly, but because of differences in how much moldy and rotten feed was eaten, as well as the degree of feed moldiness, season, type, and so on, the diarrhea may be mild or severe.
Prevention and treatment: Feeding of moldy and rotten feed should be stopped immediately, and drugs to clear the gastrointestinal tract and aid digestion should be given orally in a single drench once a day; use as appropriate, and generally it is not advisable to rush to stop the diarrhea.
4. Infectious diseases caused by bacteria or viruses
Symptoms: The sick sheep's body temperature rises, it is mentally depressed, its appetite decreases or is completely lost, the feces are foul-smelling and often contain mucus, and the condition is generally relatively severe.
Prevention and treatment: Antibacterial drugs should be the main treatment, mixed into concentrated feed and fed, or added to water and drenched, once each morning and evening, for 3-5 consecutive days. For weaker sick sheep, intravenously drip 300-500 milliliters of 5% glucose saline and 30-60 milliliters of 5% sodium bicarbonate. Traditional Chinese medicine can also be used, such as orally administering Yujin San or Sanhuang Jia Bai San decocted in water, one dose per day.
5. Other commonly used treatment methods
(1) For sick sheep with severe diarrhea, to prevent dehydration, astringent antidiarrheal drugs can be drenched twice a day until the diarrhea lessens. After the diarrhea stops, drugs that aid digestion and restore normal gastrointestinal function should be given, such as 10 grams each of codonopsis, white atractylodes, poria, and licorice, and 20 grams each of hawthorn, malt, and medicated leaven, ground together into a fine powder, mixed with boiling water, and after cooling, add one healthy cattle or sheep rumination bolus and drench together; or use 30 grams each of malt and medicated leaven and 5 grams of table salt, grind into a fine powder, mix with boiling water, and drench after cooling.
(2) Poplar flower treatment method: In spring, after poplars bloom and the catkins fall, collect poplar flowers and dry them in the sun for later use. Treatment method: ① Take 500 grams of dried poplar flowers, add an appropriate amount of water, decoct for 45-60 minutes, and take the decoction for drenching. For sheep under 25 kilograms, drench 50-150 milliliters per animal, 1-2 times a day; for sheep over 25 kilograms, drench 300-400 milliliters each time, once a day, and results can be obtained after 2-3 consecutive days. The sheep can also be allowed to drink it freely. ② Grind poplar flower powder into a fine powder, add a little cornmeal, and mix with hot water into a paste for administration according to the above dosage, or mix the powder into forage for administration.
(3) Poplar leaf treatment method: In summer, feeding sheep fresh poplar leaves can serve as both feed and prevention of diarrhea. Fresh poplar branches and leaves can also be decocted, and the decoction taken for drenching can treat diarrhea.
(4) Poplar bark treatment method: Take 500 grams of fresh poplar bark, remove the outer old bark, cut into pieces, add 1000 milliliters of water, and decoct for 30-45 minutes. Take the decoction and administer it warm, 50-150 milliliters each time, twice a day, and results can be obtained in 2-3 days.
6. Prevention:
(1) Adhere to the principle of “treating both symptoms and root causes, with emphasis on treating the root cause,” promptly identify the cause, narrow the scope, and formulate reasonable immunization procedures and medication plans, etc. Strengthen the management of disinfection of water, manure, and the environment. In winter, keep the sheep shed warm and ventilated, persist in deworming work twice a year, and add some Chinese herbal medicines according to the season, such as: Isatis leaf, Chinese pulsatilla, etc.
(2) Strengthen epidemic prevention and quarantine work for the sheep flock. In combination with the sheep flock's feeding conditions, strengthen regular quarantine of the sheep flock and improve the flock's hygiene, epidemic prevention, and health level. Establish and improve plans for the use of commonly used drugs for treatment and preventive medication. Establish an epidemic monitoring and reporting network to detect sick and virus-carrying sheep early and provide timely treatment and prevention.
The above methods are easy to obtain medicines for, simple in method, and extremely low in cost. The effects are very good, the dosage requirements are not strict, there is no adverse effect on the sheep's rumen, and there are no toxic side effects, making them suitable for farmers' needs in sheep raising and disease prevention.
