How much is a piece of yellow cowhide now? Learn to tell if it can be eaten and how to spot real from fake
Cowhide is the outer skin of cattle, and because the leather is fine-grained, strong and durable, it is often used for handicrafts. So how much is a piece of yellow cowhide? Can it be eaten? How do you tell real from fake? From the leather market we learned that if it is an unprocessed raw hide, the price is only around three or four hundred. The specific price depends on the quality and size of your leather. After raw hide is processed into finished leather (that is, a semi-finished product), the price goes up a notch, but there are also good, medium and poor grades.
Can cowhide be eaten?
Cowhide, like pig skin, is rich in collagen, but cowhide is tough in texture, and some people find it too hard to chew and not good enough in mouthfeel. In fact, cowhide can be eaten in many ways. For example, five-spice celery stir-fried cowhide, crystal cowhide jelly, braised cowhide in spiced brine, and so on.
How do you tell real cowhide from fake?
1. Burning it with fire is the simplest and most direct method. Real leather after burning smells much like burnt hair, and after burning it does not form lumps; you can pinch it into powder with your fingers. Fake leather gives off a pungent smell after burning and forms lumps after burning.
2. Looking with your eyes is mainly used to identify the type of leather and the quality of the leather grain surface. Observe that the surface of real leather has relatively obvious pores and grain patterns. In addition, the back of synthetic leather has a layer of textile fabric as a backing; this textile backing is used to increase its tensile strength, while the back of real leather has no such layer of textile fabric. This identification method is the simplest and most practical.
3. Touching the surface of the leather with your hand, if it feels smooth, soft, full and elastic, then it is real leather. Synthetic leather feels like plastic, has poor recovery, and when bent, the folds are similar in thickness no matter what.
4. Natural leather has a very strong smell of hide and fur. Even after processing, the smell is still fairly obvious, while artificial leather products have a plastic smell and no hide or fur smell.
5. Cowhide has a certain thickness and strength. Its characteristics are fine pores, evenly and tightly distributed, a full leather surface, a hide board stronger than other leathers, and a firm feel with good elasticity.
Appendix: top-grain leather and split leather
Top-grain leather: it is made by directly processing the original cowhide, or by dehairing cowhide and cutting it horizontally into upper and lower layers, with the upper part, which has a tight fiber structure, processed into cowhide top-grain leather. Top-grain leather is composed of a dense and thin fiber layer together with a slightly looser transition layer closely connected to it, and has characteristics such as good strength, elasticity and process plasticity.
Split leather: it is the second layer part with a looser fiber structure, made by spraying with chemical materials or covering with a PVC or PU film. Split leather has a loose fiber structure layer, and only after being sprayed with chemical raw materials or polished can it be used to make leather goods. It maintains certain natural elasticity and process plasticity, and its thickness requirement is the same as that of top-grain leather.
