What kind of bird is the sandgrouse? A guide to the protection status and price of desert birds

Sandgrouse is commonly listed as the collective name for the 16 species of desert birds of Asia and Africa in the suborder Pteroclidae. So is it a protected animal? How much does one cost? According to ornithological encyclopedia data, the sandgrouse genus has 14 species worldwide, distributed in Africa, Europe and Asia; in China there is only 1 species, the black-bellied sandgrouse, which is a national second-class protected animal in China.

Sandgrouse appearance

Body length is about 22-40 cm (9-16 in). The body plumage is gray or brown, the wings are pointed, the legs are short, and most species have needle-like central tail feathers. They are rapid both in flight and in running. The feather coat is thick and the skin is tough, making them a game bird that is not easy to kill. Like pigeons, they pair for life. They lay 2-3 eggs, which are dark in color and oval in shape. The nest is in a hollow on the ground. The male bird incubates the eggs at night. The chicks can leave the nest as soon as they hatch, but still need much care from both parents. The toes of the sandgrouse genus are bare. The Pallas's sandgrouse genus has no hind toe, and the front toes are covered with long feathers.

Sandgrouse species

The sandgrouse family is a small family. Its species are dull in color, resembling pigeons in appearance, and live in deserts and semi-deserts. They are found in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Sandgrouse are mostly gregarious, gathering in large flocks at water sources to drink. They build simple nests on the ground, and the chicks can leave the nest as soon as they hatch. Their ability to walk and fly is strong. China has 3 species: the Tibetan sandgrouse, the Pallas's sandgrouse, and the black-bellied sandgrouse.

Sandgrouse price

The wild sand partridge is a national second-class protected animal in China, while a farmed sand partridge costs about 100 yuan.
