How many eggs does a hen lay in a day, and does it need a rooster? What can it eat to lay more eggs
Eggs are a breakfast staple for many of us. Small as they are, they are nutritious and provide the energy we need. So, do you know how many eggs a hen lays in a day? Does it need a rooster to lay eggs? What can it eat to lay more? Let's take a look below.
1. How many eggs does a hen lay in a day?
Under normal circumstances, a hen lays one egg a day. It takes 23-25 hours for an egg to form. In other words, every time a hen lays an egg, it needs about a day to synthesize it inside its body. This is a physiological phenomenon of the animal, just like a human pregnancy lasting ten months; a normal birth will not differ by half a month before or after the due date.
2. Does a hen need a rooster to lay eggs?
A hen can lay eggs without a rooster. This is because female mammals need to mate with male mammals to reproduce, while birds can lay eggs without mating. So a hen does not need to find a rooster to mate with before it can lay eggs.
However, if a hen does not mate with a rooster, the eggs it lays are unfertilized eggs, which cannot hatch into chicks and can only be eaten by humans. So if a chicken farm raises laying hens and they are not breeding stock, such hens do not need to mate.
An egg before fertilization is called an unfertilized egg, and it cannot hatch into a chick. An egg after mating is not necessarily a fertilized egg. If fertilization fails due to pathological reasons or if the timing does not match, and the egg is already about to be laid, then mating at that point will still prevent the egg from hatching into a chick.
Only an egg that has mated and successfully completed fertilization is useful and can hatch into a chick.
3. What can a hen eat to lay more eggs?
The suitable temperature for a hen entering the laying period is around 24°C. It is now winter and the temperature is relatively low. Most free-range chickens in rural areas have stopped laying. To keep hens laying in winter, chicken farms use heating methods to keep the temperature inside the coop at around 24°C. So pay attention to the temperature of the chicken coop as well, and do not let it get too low.
Just feed the hen some rice, leftovers and the vegetable leaves discarded when preparing vegetables; there is nothing special about it. By the way, also put a little sand by the chicken coop for them to peck at, which helps them digest their food.
