Are Kangaroos Mammals? A Detailed Look at Their Diet, Reproduction and Natural Enemies
The kangaroo is any of the marsupials belonging to the order Diprotodontia, mainly distributed across the Australian mainland and parts of Papua New Guinea. So, is the kangaroo in the animal kingdom a mammal? What food does it like to eat? How many times a year does it reproduce? What are its natural enemies?
1. Is the kangaroo in the animal kingdom a mammal?
The kangaroo is the mammal that jumps the highest and the farthest. Different species of kangaroos live in a variety of different natural environments across Australia, from the rainforests and desert plains of cooler climates to the tropics.
2. What food does it like to eat?
The kangaroo is a herbivore, eating a variety of plants, and some also eat fungi. They are mostly active at night, but some are active in the early morning or evening. Kangaroos live on short, moist green grass close to the ground, leaving tall grass and dry grass to other animals. A few species of kangaroos also eat leaves or small tree shoots. Within the kangaroo family, “racial discrimination” is very severe; they cannot tolerate members of other groups entering the family, and even family members returning after a long absence are unwelcome. Even if the family accepts a new member, it must be taught a lesson, and only after the new member learns many “rules” can it become integrated into the family.
3. How many times a year does the kangaroo reproduce?
Kangaroos reproduce once or twice a year. The joey is born about 30 to 40 days after fertilization, is very tiny, has no vision and little fur, and is placed in the mother kangaroo's pouch immediately after birth. It is not until 6 to 7 months that it begins to leave the pouch for short periods to learn about life. Only after a year does it formally wean, leave the pouch, but still move around near the mother kangaroo, ready to obtain help and protection at any time. A mother kangaroo can simultaneously have one joey outside the pouch, one joey inside the pouch, and one joey waiting to be born.
4. What are the kangaroo's natural enemies?
The kangaroo's natural enemy is the dingo. There was also the Tasmanian wolf of Australia, but it became extinct in 1933. Its greatest enemy is still humans; human grazing has caused a reduction in kangaroo habitat and a shortage of food.
