The muntjac is a wild animal in China, with high food value and economic value. In addition, many Chinese people nowadays regard eating wild game as a symbol of elevating their status, so the economic value of the muntjac needs no doubt. At present, captive breeding is also being carried out in many places, so how many fawns can a muntjac give birth to in one litter? What certificates are required for captive breeding?

There are three species of muntjac distributed in China, namely the black muntjac, the Indian muntjac (red muntjac) and the small muntjac (Reeves's muntjac). Among them, the black muntjac is a national first-class protected animal, and apart from zoos and relevant scientific research institutions, individuals cannot breed it privately. The Indian muntjac and the small muntjac are "three-have" protected animals, that is, animals that are beneficial or have important economic or scientific research value, and captive breeding can be carried out after obtaining the relevant certificate permits.

Muntjacs generally mate mostly in spring. One male muntjac can mate with 10~20 female muntjacs. The gestation period is about 180 days, and each litter mostly produces 1~2 fawns.

Certificates required for captive breeding of muntjacs:

1. Wildlife domestication and breeding license. Before breeding, this certificate must be obtained from the local forestry bureau, otherwise captive breeding of muntjacs is an illegal act.

2. Animal epidemic prevention condition qualification certificate. Apply for it at the local county-level or higher animal husbandry department. Only after review confirms that the animal epidemic prevention conditions are qualified can this certificate be obtained.

In addition, a breeding farm planning and construction permit, a business license, etc. also need to be obtained.

Muntjac breeding techniques:

Muntjacs are relatively easy to breed, and there is not much difference from raising deer or sheep.

Food: Various grains, green grass, hay, crop straw, tree leaves, etc. can all serve as food for muntjacs, but when feeding, it is best to combine multiple feeds reasonably. Only in this way will the nutrition be comprehensive and balanced, and the muntjacs be able to grow healthily.

Management: Muntjacs are timid by nature and should be bred in a relatively quiet place. Normally, try not to frighten them. In addition, muntjacs like cleanliness, so breeders should regularly clean the sanitation inside the enclosure and open the windows appropriately for ventilation, so as to keep the enclosure clean, hygienic and dry.
