In rural areas, besides chickens, ducks, pigs and cattle, rabbits can also be considered common rural livestock and poultry, so, are rabbits mammals? How long can they generally live? What should be noted in farming?

1. Are rabbits mammals?

Rabbits are mammals; they are the collective name for all genera under the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha in the class Mammalia. There are 9 genera and 43 species in total. The greatest variety is found in eastern and southern Asia, Africa and North America, with a few species distributed in Europe and South America. Some species are widely distributed or have been introduced to many regions, while quite a few species have very limited distributions. They are terrestrial, most often found in deserts, desertified grasslands, tropical open woodlands, dry grasslands and forests or woods.

2. How long can rabbits generally live?

According to data from the phylum Chordata, the average lifespan of a rabbit is 5 to 12 years, and the longest-lived rabbit reached nearly 19 years old! Generally speaking, smaller rabbits have shorter lifespans than larger rabbits.

3. What should be noted in farming rabbits?

A rabbit's living environment should be hygienic, dry and well ventilated. If the environment is damp and unhygienic, bacteria can easily breed and cause skin disease in rabbits;

It is recommended that when a young rabbit first arrives home, you first take it to the hospital for a fecal test to check for coccidia rather than randomly feeding it coccidiostat drugs; coccidiosis comes on acutely, and although many young rabbits die of coccidia, no small number of rabbits are poisoned to death by coccidiostat drugs

If the cage a young rabbit lives in is a dog cage, a wooden board should be added inside the cage for it to stand on; without a standing surface, it will develop pododermatitis over time, and pododermatitis is very difficult to cure;

If a rabbit develops diarrhea from eating vegetables, promptly give it 4 tablets of lactasin; if you do not have lactasin at home, you can also feed lactic acid bacteria tablets or probiotics;

A rabbit's teeth grow continuously, so you must prepare a chew stick for it. Some rabbits like to bite electrical wires and the like, so pay attention;

Rabbit supplies should be cleaned and disinfected regularly;

Cage-raised rabbits should be given more than 1 hour of activity time every day;

If you are worried about rabbits defecating everywhere, you can teach it to use a litter box. Its urine and droppings should be cleaned up every day; if not cleaned, ammonia gas will be produced after they accumulate over time;

Do not bathe young rabbits. Rabbits are very clean animals and groom their fur by licking every day, so bathing them is not recommended. However, when bathing is absolutely unavoidable, choose a day with good weather and sunshine, and make sure to prevent water from entering its ears; if you are not careful, it will get otitis media. You also cannot use human products such as body wash or soap on it. After bathing, dry it immediately, otherwise it will catch a cold;

Rabbits do not feel full, so you must control the amount of food to avoid overfeeding them to death;

Rabbits cannot eat too much starch; starch is very bad for rabbits;

When picking up a rabbit, never grab it by the ears. The ears are an important organ for rabbits; rabbits have no sweat glands and must use their ears to dissipate heat. A rabbit's ears are not meant for people to grab. If the rabbit's ears are injured by grabbing and nerve damage is caused, the rabbit's ears will not be able to stand upright or turn. The correct way to pick up a rabbit is: support the rabbit's back with one hand, and lift the rabbit's bottom with the other hand, so that the rabbit's legs and belly face forward.
