Diamond Rose is actually a miniature series variety of rose. Because its flowering branches are short and small and its flowers are the size of a bean button, it is beautifully named “Diamond Rose” or “Pocket Rose”. It is very suitable for garden landscaping and potted appreciation, and has the effect of beautifying the environment and embellishing the home. So how do you grow Diamond Rose? What are the cultivation methods and precautions? How do you water it?

At present, the main varieties of Diamond Rose include: Dwarf Fairy (red), Golden Sun (yellow center with white edge), Rose Tree (mixed colors), Meilang Huona (vermilion with silver glow), Magic (red), Why Not (yellow center inlaid with rose-red face), Clarissa (apricot yellow), Cricket (vermilion center), Ruby (black-red), Sun Girl (golden yellow with orange-red), Winter Plum (flesh-pink white), Freedom Gold (golden yellow), Little Girl (deep red face with silver glow), and so on. The flower colors come in many varieties.

Cultivation Methods for Diamond Rose

1. Growing environment: Diamond Rose likes a warm, humid environment with ample sunlight and air circulation, and avoids dark, damp, and poorly ventilated conditions. It has a certain cold resistance and is suitable for growing in loose, fertile soil containing humus.

2. Watering: During the growing period, Diamond Rose can be placed outdoors in a sunny, ventilated spot for care. Water according to the principle of “water when dry, stop when wet.” Neither water accumulation in the pot soil nor excessive dryness is good for plant growth.

3. Fertilizing: Apply a diluted decomposed liquid fertilizer or compound fertilizer once every 7 to 10 days. In summer, when temperatures are high, the plant grows slowly and blooms relatively sparsely, so it can be placed in a spot without direct sunlight and with good ventilation for care, and should not be fertilized. When fertilizing, note: apply frequently but lightly. Because it blooms continuously, fertilization can be continuous, but during the high-temperature period in summer and the dormant period in winter, fertilization should be reduced or suspended.

4. Pruning: Reasonable pruning is the key to controlling the flowering period of Diamond Rose. In practice, pruning should be carried out according to the overall growth condition of the Diamond Rose plant. After each flowering, promptly cut off the spent flowers and branch tips, generally cutting 0.5 cm above the second or third compound leaf, so that it sends out new branches and blooms again. Carry out one heavy pruning in early winter each year, cutting off weak branches and shortening the other branches by 1/2 to 1/3.

5. Repotting: Repot once each year before spring budding.

6. Propagation methods: sowing, cuttings, grafting, division, layering, tissue culture, etc. The most commonly used and most convenient methods are cuttings and bud grafting.

Watering methods and precautions for Diamond Rose:

Diamond Rose dislikes waterlogging. Apart from making sure to water thoroughly when planting, pay attention to controlling the amount of water in normal times. For those planted in the ground, as long as the weather is not dry, they can grow relying on the soil moisture underground without watering. For potted Diamond Rose, watering should be based on weather conditions and whether the pot soil is dry or wet. The flower pot must drain well and allow air through; it must neither hold standing water nor be too dry.

Watering Diamond Rose in the afternoon can make the rose flowers larger. It is best not to water in the early morning, at noon, or when it is raining, otherwise it may cause root rot. In addition, in dry weather it is best not to water in the morning either, because at this time Diamond Rose has just “revived” from its state the previous night, and watering this way over the long term can easily lead to failure to bloom.

For potted roses, it is advisable to loosen the soil or medium around the plant to let moisture evaporate as quickly as possible. For ground-planted roses, if there is continuous rainy weather, dig drainage ditches around the plant to remove standing water promptly.

[Tips] Diamond Rose likes sunlight and cannot be planted in a dark, damp environment, otherwise it will grow weakly, leading to few or even no flowers. It must be planted in a sunny, ventilated, and well-drained place or flower pot, and the surrounding air is best kept humid.
