Does the yellow catfish have spines on its back and is it a "stimulating food"? Plus sea fish identification, prices and farming techniques
Yellow catfish is also known as Angyi, Huang'ang, Angci, steel needle, yellow bone fish, yellow tooth fish, and Angci fish; in Hunan it is called yellow duck call, and it has become a famous Hunan dish. So is yellow catfish a stimulating food? Is it a sea fish? Can dead ones be eaten? What is the price per jin? What are the farming techniques? According to the Wuhan fresh food market, the current price of yellow catfish is 15-20 yuan.
Is yellow catfish a stimulating food?
Fish, shrimp and crabs themselves contain histamine, and histamine can increase vascular permeability, dilate microvessels, cause congestion, plasma exudation, edema, hyperactive glandular secretion and increased eosinophils, thereby causing an allergic reaction in the body, that is, an allergic response, and triggering skin diseases such as erythema, papules, blisters and fever. So it is a stimulating food.
Is yellow catfish a sea fish?
Some yellow catfish live in freshwater; some live in seawater; and some are found in both freshwater and seawater.

Monoculture:
1. Pond selection, clearing and disinfection: choose a fish pond with good water quality, sufficient water source and no pollution, with an area of 2-10 mu, pond water depth of 1.5m-2.5m, and equipped with aerators and other mechanical equipment. Remove excess silt (the silt at the pond bottom should not exceed 10cm), expose it to sunlight for several days, and then carry out clearing and disinfection. 10-15 days before stocking, apply 50-75kg of quicklime or 7-10kg of bleaching powder per mu, dissolve and mix into a slurry, and splash it over the whole pond. Apply 150-200kg/mu of fermented organic manure to fertilize the water.
2. Fingerling stocking and species combination: in March-April of the same year, stock fingerlings generally above 20g each, with a stocking density of generally 2000-3000 fish/mu. The stocked fingerlings should be uniform in size, bright in color, smooth in body surface, free of disease and injury, with intact fins and strong physique. Before stocking, soak the fingerlings in 3-5% salt water for 10-15 minutes. Half a month later, stock summer fingerlings of silver carp and bighead carp, with 1000 bighead carp/mu and 3000 silver carp/mu.
3. Bait feeding: yellow catfish is omnivorous and mainly feeds on animal feed. It can be raised with fresh live animal bait, such as small fish, small shrimp, livestock and poultry offal, snail and mussel meat, etc., and can also be fed with soybean cake, peanut cake, bran, etc. Or buy complete formula feed for yellow catfish for feeding. Feeding follows the “four fixed” principle, with feeding twice a day. Before May, feed at 2% to 2.5% of fish body weight. From June to August, when water temperature is high, yellow catfish is at its peak growth period, so feed at 4% to 5% of fish body weight; after September, as water temperature gradually drops, the amount of concentrated feed should be gradually reduced, and flexibly controlled according to fish feeding and weather changes.
4. Water quality regulation and disease control: yellow catfish has relatively high requirements for water quality. Maintain water transparency at 35 to 45 cm and pH at 6.5 to 8. In May and June, add water once a month, exchanging 30cm of new water each time; from June to September, change water once every half month, exchanging about 15cm each time, keeping the water depth at 1.2-1.5m. Turn on the aerator regularly to increase dissolved oxygen in the water. Adhere to the principle of “prevention first, combining prevention and control” in carrying out disease control work. Regularly use quicklime, bleaching powder or other drugs for disinfection to kill bacteria, viruses and other pathogenic microorganisms in the pond. Yellow catfish is a scaleless fish and is relatively sensitive to drugs, so drugs such as trichlorfon and copper sulfate should be used with caution.
2. Polyculture:
(1) Polyculture is currently the main method for raising adult yellow catfish. It has the following advantages: first, it can feed on residual bait, small trash fish, organic debris, etc. in the pond, improving the pond's self-purification capacity. Second, yellow catfish feeds on large parasites in the water body, which can reduce the occurrence of fish diseases. Third, without affecting the yield of the main cultured species, it can increase yellow catfish by 20kg per mu, increasing the benefit by more than 100 yuan per mu.
1. Polyculture in adult fish ponds. Yellow catfish can be polycultured in ponds for the four major Chinese carps and ponds mainly culturing feeding fish. The pond area is 2-30 mu, water depth 1.5-2.0m, and generally 40-50 yellow catfish are stocked per mu, with a size of 3-4cm, which can increase income by about 10kg per mu.
2. Polyculture in adult crab ponds. Polyculturing yellow catfish in crab ponds can make full use of the bait biological resources in the crab pond. Generally, the crab pond area is 30-50 mu, with aquatic plant coverage of about 50%. After stocking crab seed, stock 30-50 yellow catfish of 3-5cm per mu, which can increase income by 8-10kg per mu.
3. Polyculture in large water bodies. Generally, 40-60 yellow catfish are stocked per mu, with a size of 3-4cm, which can increase yellow catfish by 10-15kg per mu.
(2) Precautions for polyculture:
1. Keep relatively high dissolved oxygen in the water body.
2. Maintain reasonable stocking density and size.
3. After polyculturing yellow catfish, it is not suitable to polyculture other carnivorous fish; yellow catfish should not be polycultured in ponds for freshwater prawns or freshwater crayfish.
4. During polyculture, pay attention to the feeding and growth of yellow catfish. If the growth size is too small, appropriately supplement with small trash fish and shrimp or feed specially prepared artificial bait. When feeding artificial bait, feed the main cultured species first, then feed the yellow catfish.
5. When polyculturing yellow catfish in crab ponds, the crab pond must maintain sufficient natural bait. You can also first put 300-400kg of snails per mu into the crab pond, as well as some egg-bearing crucian carp and berried oriental river prawns, allowing them to reproduce naturally for the river crabs and yellow catfish to feed on freely.
